Objectives 3. Review Questions: Question 1 Question 2 Question 3 Question 4 Question 5

This document discusses impedance matching in waveguides. It begins with learning objectives around impedance matching and waveguides. It then provides 5 review questions that cover topics like: what impedance matching is, how a slide screw tuner works to match loads, why admittances are used instead of impedances in calculations, why a slide screw tuner is easier to use than an iris for matching, and how moving a slide screw tuner would affect the impedance presented to the generator. The document concludes by stating the objectives were fulfilled.

Introduction:

Being considerate about our learning objectives, these are as follows;

 Slide-screw Tuner
 Reflection coefficient along a wave guide
 Determining an impedance along a wave guide
 Determining the impedance at a given point along a wave guide (model)
 Impedance coordinating with impedance coordinating of a heap (model)

Objectives:

Our objectives include developing core knowledge and concepts regarding match making
of impedance and wave guide.

Review Questions

 Question 1

What is impedance match making?

The term “impedance matchmaking” is related to the designing of input as well as output
impedance regarding a particular electrical load. As a result of impedance matchmaking,
signal reflection is minimized such that the power transfer for the load is maximized. In
short, impedance matchmaking results in a productive transfer of power.

 Question 2

Briefly describe the procedure used to match a load with a slide screw turner.

With respect to a slide screw, it consists of two shafts that are precisely hardened and
grounded placed parallel to each other. These shafts guide a carriage that is being
controlled by a center lead screw having a trapezoidal thread. The carriage slides on
Teflon coated bearings that play a key role in reducing friction and also eliminate noise.
Inside the carriages, there exist a vertical axis made up of stainless steel having 1.5 to
3µm. It controls the vertical position for each probe. The use of spring loaded horizontal
and vertical movements also eliminates the backlash within the carriage.

 Question 3

Why are admittances used instead of impedances when doing calculations to match
loads?

While making calculations for matching loads, the use of bus admittance matrix is
advantageous in the following aspects;

 The method of preparation for the bus admittance matrix data is simple.
 The formation and modification for the bus admittance matrix is also easier.
 With respect to the computer memory, the bus admittance matrix is a square
matrix so it requires less memory.
 Question 4

Why is it easier to match an impedance with a slide screw turner than with an iris?

Matching an impedance with a slide screw turner is easier due to the following reasons;

 The slide screw turner is composed of shafts such that there exist two precisely
hardened and grounded parallel shafts within a slide screw.
 The turner is controlled by a center lead screw through a trapezoid shaped thread.
 Reduction and elimination of friction and noise takes place as a result of the
Teflon coated bearings on which the carriage slides.
 Furthermore, the screw turner method also gives a precise reading as compared
with the other iris method.
 Question 5

Figure 104 shows a wave guide with a load that has been matched by using a slide
screw turner located at point 1. What impedance will be presented by the wave
guide to the generator if the screw is moved from point 1 to point 2? Explain.

Impedance by the wave guide generator = Zn

For every (lambda/2), there is a repetition in impedance

So, Zin=Z(x)

Thus, the length (lamba /2) is created between the source and load as a result of the
movement of screw from point 1 to point 2.

Now, applying the impedance transformation property,

Z=Z(load)

Conclusion:

We have studied about how impedance for the wave guide is matched. In this regard, the
two methods include iris technique and screw turner. We have utilized screw turner
strategy on the basis of least error. In short, our learning objectives have been fulfilled.
