Study of Electric Circuit Lab Equipment: Experiment # 1

The document summarizes the objectives, apparatus, and procedures for Experiment #1 on studying electric circuit lab equipment. The key pieces of equipment described are a breadboard for building circuits, a digital multi-meter for measuring voltage, current and resistance, a 3-channel DC power supply for providing DC power at different voltage levels, and a function generator. Experiment # 1

Objective:
Study of Electric Circuit lab equipment
Apparatus:
• Bread board
• Digital Multi-meter
• DC Power Supply(3- Channels)
• Function Generator
• Digital Oscilloscope(2-Channels)
Theory:
• Bread board:
A breadboard is used to build and test circuits quickly before finalizing any circuit
design. The breadboard has many holes into which circuit components like ICs and resistors can
be inserted. The bread board has strips of metal which run underneath the board and connect the
holes. The top and bottom rows of holes are connected horizontally while middle holes are
connected vertically. To use the bread board, the legs of components are placed in the holes. Each
set of holes connected by a metal strip underneath forms a node. A node is a point in a circuit
where two components are connected. Connections between different components are formed by
putting their legs in a common node. The long top and bottom row of holes are usually used for
power supply connections. The rest of the circuit is built by placing components and connecting
them together with jumper wires.

• Digital Multi-meter:
A digital multimeter (DMM) is a testing tool that measures electrical values: current in amps,
voltage in volts and resistance in ohms. The digital multimeter includes four components:

i. Display: Where readings can be viewed.

ii. Buttons: For selecting various functions

iii. Input jacks: Where testing leads are inserted

iv. Dial: For selecting primary measurement values (volts, amps, ohms).
Procedure:
To measure Voltages, insert Red probe in mAVΩ and Black probe in COM.

To measure Resistance, set the range of DMM according to given resistor.

To measure Current,we have to break circuit and put DMM in line.

• DC Power Supply(3-Channels):
The DC Power Supply consists of three channels used for DC power.First two channels give 0-
32V and 0-5A while third channel is fixed having 5V and 3A.If we want 64 volts we have to
connect first two channels in series having load 5A and if we want 69 volts we have to connect all
three channels in series having maximum load of 3A.

Procedure:
i. Switch ON the DC Power Supply.

ii. Select the channel which we want to use.

iii. Set the voltage with the help of knob as per your choice.

iv. Now,press output botton.

v. Then connect the clips of power supply with the probes of DMM.

vi. Voltage is shown on screen of DMM.
