1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Maintain one copy copies of each document on site.

B. Valves: Manufacturer's name and pressure rating marked on valve body.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver and store valves in shipping containers with labeling in place.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 WATER PIPING

A. High Density Polyethylene Pipe: AWWA C901 ASTM D3035, for 315 400 560 710
900 1000 1000 kPa pressure rating:
1. Fittings: AWWA C901 molded or fabricated.
2. Joints: Compression Butt fusion.
3. Pipe and fittings shall be to ISO 4427-2, DIN 8074/8075 or AWWA C906.
Pipe shall be supplied in straight pieces and not rolled on a drum. The ends
of each pipe shall be plain and suitable for heat fusion. Pipe and fittings shall
be class 10 kg/cm2 minimum with PE compound number required to give
pressure rating not less than 10 bars.
4. Materials used shall have a standard PE code designation 3408 and a
minimum hydrostatic design basis of 1600 psi according to AWWA C906
Table 1.
5. Manufacturers shall provide certification that stress regression testing has
been performed on the pipe products. Materials shall also meet elevated
temperature requirements as given in Table 2 AWWA C906.
6. Fittings shall be to AWWA C906, extruded or injection molded suitable for
class of pipe required. Joints for pipes and fittings shall be by heat fusion and
in strict accordance with pipe manufactures recommendations. Joints shall
have a tensile strength equal to that of the pipe. Fusion temperature, interface
pressure, alignment and cooling time, shall be according to manufactures
recommendations.
7. Tests on PE Compounds: Where PE is used for potable water, PE compounds
in pipes and fittings shall contain no ingredients in an amount that has been
demonstrated to migrate into water in quantities considered to be toxic. PE
compounds shall be tested and certified suitable for potable water by the
National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Testing Laboratory – USA, or the
Canadian Standard Association (CSA) Testing Laboratory, or other
accredited testing agency. Tests shall be made in accordance with
requirements no less restrictive than those in the NSF Standard No. 14
(1976), Sectionc 3. The seal and mark of the testing laboratory shall be
included on pipes and fittings HDPE Valves, DN80 (3-Inch NPS) and
Smaller:
8. Provide metal water-service valves, instead of HDPE valves, for sizes larger
than DN80 (3-inch NPS).

2.2 GATE VALVES

A. 64 mm and Smaller: Brass or Bronze body, non-rising stem, inside screw, single
wedge or disc, compression IPS ends, with control rod, post indicator, extension box
and valve key.

B. 75 mm and Larger: AWWA C500, Iron body, bronze trim, non-rising stem with
square nut, single wedge, flanged mechanical joint ends, control rod, post indicator,
extension box and valve key.

2.3 BALL VALVES

A. 50 mm and Smaller: Brass body, Teflon coated brass ball, rubber seats and stem
seals, Tee stem pre-drilled for control rod, AWWA IPS compression inlet end, and
compression IPS outlet with electrical ground connector, with control rod, extension
box and valve key.

2.4 SWING CHECK VALVES

A. 50 mm to 600 mm: AWWA C508, iron body, bronze trim, 45 22 degree swing disc,
renewable disc and seat, flanged ends.

2.5 HYDRANT

A. Hydrant: In accordance with utility company fire department requirements.

B. Hydrant: AWWA C502, UL 246, dry barrel type, inside dimension of 175 mm
minimum, with minimum 125 mm diameter valve seat opening; minimum net water
area of barrel not less than 190 percent of valve opening; 150 mm bell or mechanical
joint inlet connection with accessories, gland bolts, and gaskets.

C. Hydrant Extensions: Fabricate in multiples of 150 mm with rod and coupling to


increase barrel length.

D. Hose and Streamer Connection: Match sizes and type of thread with utility company
fire department, two hose nozzles, one pumper nozzle.

E. Finish: Primer and two coats of enamel Special coating color in accordance with
utility company fire department requirements.

2.6 UNDERGROUND PIPE MARKERS

A. Plastic Ribbon Tape: Bright colored, continuously printed, minimum 150 mm wide
by 0.10 mm thick, manufactured for direct burial service.

B. Trace Wire: Magnetic detectable conductor, clear brightly colored plastic covering,
imprinted with "Water Service” in large letters.

2.7 BEDDING AND COVER MATERIALS

A. Bedding: Fill Type A1 A2 A3 A4 as specified in Section 312300.

B. Cover: Fill Type A1 A2 A3 A4, as specified in Section 312300.

C. Soil Backfill from Above Pipe to Finish Grade: Soil Type S1 S2, as specified in
Section 312300. Subsoil with no rocks over 150 mm in diameter, frozen earth or
foreign matter.

2.8 ACCESSORIES

A. Concrete for Thrust Restraints: Concrete type specified in Section 033000.

2.10 MANUFACTURERS

Approved Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify building service connection and municipal utility water main size, location,
and invert are as indicated on Drawings.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Cut pipe ends square, ream pipe and tube ends to full pipe diameter, remove burrs.

B. Remove scale and dirt on inside and outside before assembly.

C. Prepare pipe connections to equipment with flanges or unions.

3.3 BEDDING

A. Excavate pipe trench in accordance with Section 312300 for Work of this Section.

B. Form and place concrete for pipe thrust restraints at change of pipe direction. Place
concrete to permit full access to pipe and pipe accessories. Provide sq m thrust
restraint bearing on subsoil.

C. Place bedding material at trench bottom, level fill materials in one continuous layer
not exceeding 150 200 mm compacted depth; compact to 95 percent.

D. Backfill around sides and to top of pipe with cover fill, tamp in place and compact to
95 percent.

3.4 INSTALLATION - PIPE

A. Maintain separation of water main from sewer piping in accordance with code.

B. Group piping with other site piping work whenever practical.

C. Install pipe to indicated elevation to within tolerance of 20 mm.

D. Install ductile iron piping and fittings to AWWA C600.

E. Install grooved and shouldered pipe joints to AWWA C606.

F. Route pipe in straight line.

G. Install pipe to allow for expansion and contraction without stressing pipe or joints.

H. Install access fittings to permit disinfection of water system

I. Form and place concrete for thrust restraints at each elbow or change of direction of
pipe main.

J. Establish elevations of buried piping with not less than m of cover.

K. Install plastic ribbon tape continuous over top of pipe. Buried 150 mm below finish
grade, above pipe line.

3.5 INSTALLATION - VALVES AND HYDRANTS

A. Set valves on solid bearing compacted soil.

B. Center and plumb valve box over valve. Set box cover flush with finished grade.

C. Set hydrants plumb; locate pumper nozzle perpendicular to and facing roadway.

D. Set hydrants to grade, with nozzles at least 500 mm above ground.

E. Locate control valve 100 mm away from hydrant.

F. Provide drainage pit 900 mm square by 600 mm deep filled with 50 mm washed
gravel. Encase elbow of hydrant in gravel to 150 mm above drain opening. Do not
connect drain opening to sewer.

3.6 INSTALLATION - METERS

A. Install positive displacement meters in accordance with AWWA M6, with isolating
valves on inlet and outlet. Provide full line size bypass with globe valve for liquid
service meters.

3.7 SERVICE CONNECTIONS

A. Install water service in accordance with utility company requirements with water
meter with by-pass valves and sand strainer.

B. Install water meter and backflow preventer in concrete vault located on site. Refer to
Plumbing Specialties section.

C. Install water service to 1500 mm of building. Connect to building water service.


Refer to Section Plumbing Specialties Section.

D. Water meter located within building.

E. Install 1.2 mm galvanized sheet metal sleeve surrounding service main to 150 mm
above floor and 1800 mm minimum below grade. Size for 50 mm minimum of glass
fiber insulation stuffing.

F. Water service connection to be brass, saddle and tapping device materials to be


ductile iron.

3.8 DISINFECTION OF DOMESTIC WATER PIPING SYSTEM

A. Flush and disinfect system

3.9 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Section 230593- Execution Requirements: Field inspecting, testing, adjusting, and


balancing.

B. Perform pressure test on domestic site water distribution system in accordance with
AWWA C600.

C. Pressure test system to 1380 kPa. Repair leaks and re-test.


1. After completion of pipeline installation, including backfill, but prior to final
connection to existing system, conduct, in presence of Architect/Engineer,
concurrent hydrostatic pressure and leakage tests in accordance with AWWA
C600.
2. Provide equipment required to perform leakage and hydrostatic pressure
tests.
3. Test Pressure: Not less than 1380 kPa or 345 kPa in excess of maximum
static pressure, whichever is greater.
4. Conduct hydrostatic test for at least two-hour duration.
5. No pipeline installation will be approved when pressure varies by more than
34 kPa at completion of hydrostatic pressure test.
6. Before applying test pressure, completely expel air from section of piping
under test. Provide corporation cocks so air can be expelled as pipeline is
filled with water. After air has been expelled, close corporation cocks and
apply test pressure. At conclusion of tests, remove corporation cocks
removed and plug resulting piping openings.
7. Slowly bring piping to test pressure and allow system to stabilize prior to
conducting leakage test. Do not open or close valves at differential pressures
above rated pressure.
8. Examine exposed piping, fittings, valves, hydrants, and joints carefully
during hydrostatic pressure test. Repair or replace damage or defective pipe,
fittings, valves, hydrants, or joints discovered, following pressure test.
9. No pipeline installation will be approved when leakage is greater than that
determined by the following formula:

L = (SD\/¯¯P)/133,200
L = allowable, in gallons per hour
S = length of pipe tested, in inches
D = nominal diameter of pipe, in inches
p = average test pressure during leakage test, in pounds per square inch (gauge)

10. When leakage exceeds specified acceptable rate, locate source and make
repairs. Repeat test until specified leakage requirements are met.
