General Instructions:

(i)All questions are compulsory. There are 27questions in all.


(ii) This question paper has four sections:Section A, Section B, Section C and
Section D.
(iii) Section A contains five questions of one mark each, Section B contains
sevenquestions of two marks each; Section C contains twelve questions of three
marks each; Section D containsthree questions of five marks each.

(iv)There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been providedin one
question of 2 marks, one question of 3 marks and in all the three questions of five
marks weightage. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

SECTION A

1. How can systematic errors be minimized or eliminated? 1

2. Two balls A and B of different masses (mass of A is greater than mass


of B) are thrown vertically upwards with the same speed.What is the
relation of their speeds at the point of projection in their downward
direction? (Neglect the air resistance). 1

3. State the principle of conservation of linear momentum.1

4. Convert 1kWh into joules. 1

5. Does the centre of mass of a body necessarily lie inside the body? Give
an example. 1

SECTION B

6. Name the four fundamental(or basic) forces in nature. 1


7. What are the applications and limitations of dimensional analysis (Any
two for each)? 2

8. Explain clearly, with examples, the distinction between:


a) Magnitude of displacement over an interval of time, and the total
length of path covered by a particle over the same interval
b) Magnitude of average velocity over an interval of time and the average
speed over the same interval. 2

9. A particle starts from the origin at t=0s with a velocity of 10j m/s and
moves in the x-y plane with a constant acceleration of (8i+2j) ms-2.(i) At
what time the x-coordinate of the particle is 16m? (ii)What is the y-
coordinate of the particle at the time? 2

10. Write the various (any four) methods by which friction between two
surfaces can be reduced. 2

11. State the work-energy theorem. Prove it for a constant force. 2

With the help of a neat, labeled diagram, derive the expression for
the potential energy stored in a spring.

12. Find the scalar and vector products of two vectors A=(3i-4j+5k) and
B=(-2i+j-3k) 2

SECTION C

13. Derive the expression for thetime periodof a simple pendulumusing


method of dimensions.Consider the period of oscillation of the simple
pendulum depends on its length (l), mass of the bob (m) and acceleration
due to gravity (g). 3

14. Define the following:


(i)Light year (ii) Astronomical unit (iii) Least count of an instrument.3

15. Obtain the following equations of motion for a constant acceleration


using method of calculus (i) s=ut+ at2(ii)v2–u2 =2as, where the symbols
have their usual meanings.3

16. Draw (i) acceleration – time (ii) velocity – time and (iii) displacement
–time graphs for motion of an object under free fall. Explain the nature of
the graphs. Neglect air resistance and take a=-g. 3

17. Two parallel rail tracks run north-south.Train A moves north with a
speed of 54km/h and train B moves south with a speed of 90km/h. What
is the (i) velocity of B with respect to A? (ii) Velocity of ground with
respect to B? And (iii) velocity of a monkey runningon the roof of the train
Aagainst its motion (with a velocity of 18km/h with respect to the train A)
as observed by a man standing on the ground? 3
18.Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of two co-initial
vectors A and B in terms of their magnitudes and angle θ between
them.3

19. Define centripetal acceleration. Derive an expression for the


centripetal acceleration of particlemoving withuniform speed ‘V’ along a
circular path of radius ‘r’.3

20. Explain why


(i)Passengers are thrown forward from their seats when speeding bus
stopssuddenly (ii) it is easier to pull a lawn mower than to push it. (iii)a
cricketer moves his hands backwards while holding a catch 3

(a) Upwards with a uniform speed of 10ms-1
(b) Downwards with a uniform acceleration of 5ms-2
(c) Upwards with a uniform acceleration of 5ms-2
What would be the readings on the scale in each case?

21. Two bodies A and B of masses 10kg and 20kg respectively kept on a
smooth, horizontal surface are tied to the ends of a light string. A
horizontal force F=600N is applied to (i) B (ii)A along the direction of
string.Find the tension in the string in each case with the help of suitable
free body diagrams.3

22. What is meant by positive work, negative work and zero work?
Explain with an example each. 3

23.The blades of a windmill sweep out a circle of area ‘A’. (i) If the wind
flows at a velocity V perpendicular to the circle, what is the mass of the
air passing through it in the time ‘t’?(ii) What is the kinetic energy of the
air? (iii) Assume that the windmill converts 25% of the wind’s energy into
electrical energy, and that A=30m2, V=36km/h and the density of air is
1.2kgm-3. What is the electrical power produced? 3

24.Find the centre of mass of three particles placed at the vertices of an


equilateral triangle. The masses of the particles are 100g, 150g and 200g
respectively. Each side of the equilateral triangle is 0.5m long. 3

SECTION D

25. (a) A projectile is fired with a velocity ‘u’ making an angle ‘θ’ with
horizontal.Derive the expressions for (i) time of maximum height (ii) time
of flight (iii) maximum height (iv) horizontal range 5

(b)(i) Show that the path of the projectilefired with a velocity ‘u’making
an angle ‘θ’ with horizontal is parabola.
A cricket ball is thrown at a speed 28m/s in a direction 300 above the
horizontal. Calculate (ii) the maximum height (iii) the time taken by the
ball to return to the same level, and (iv)the distance from the thrower to
the point where the ball returns to the same level.

26. (a)(i)What is the need for banking of a road? (ii) Obtain an expression
for the maximum speed with which a vehicle can safely negotiate a
curved road banked at an angle ‘θ’. The co-efficient of friction between
the wheels and the road is ‘µ’.5

(b) (i) State Newton’s second law of motion. Derive a mathematical


formula to calculate force if mass remains constant.
(ii) The motion of a particle of mass ‘m’ is described by y=ut+ gt2.
Find the force acting on the particle.

27) (a) A bob of mass ‘m’ is suspended by a light string of length ‘L’. It is
imparted a horizontal velocity ‘V0’ at the lowest point ‘A’ such that it
completes a semi-circular trajectory in the vertical plane with the string
becoming slack only on reaching the topmost point ‘C’as shown in figure.
Obtain an expression for (i) V0 (ii) the speeds at points B and C; (iii) the
ratio of the kinetic energies KB/KC at B and C. Comment on the nature of
the trajectory of the bob after it reaches the point C. 5

elastic collision. (iii) Derive the expressions for the velocities of the two
bodies after an elastic collision in one dimension.
