General Instructions:
(iv)There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been providedin one
question of 2 marks, one question of 3 marks and in all the three questions of five
marks weightage. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

SECTION A
5. Does the centre of mass of a body necessarily lie inside the body? Give
an example. 1
SECTION B
9. A particle starts from the origin at t=0s with a velocity of 10j m/s and
moves in the x-y plane with a constant acceleration of (8i+2j) ms-2.(i) At
what time the x-coordinate of the particle is 16m? (ii)What is the y-
coordinate of the particle at the time? 2
10. Write the various (any four) methods by which friction between two
surfaces can be reduced. 2
12. Find the scalar and vector products of two vectors A=(3i-4j+5k) and
B=(-2i+j-3k) 2
SECTION C
16. Draw (i) acceleration – time (ii) velocity – time and (iii) displacement
–time graphs for motion of an object under free fall. Explain the nature of
the graphs. Neglect air resistance and take a=-g. 3
17. Two parallel rail tracks run north-south.Train A moves north with a
speed of 54km/h and train B moves south with a speed of 90km/h. What
is the (i) velocity of B with respect to A? (ii) Velocity of ground with
respect to B? And (iii) velocity of a monkey runningon the roof of the train
Aagainst its motion (with a velocity of 18km/h with respect to the train A)
as observed by a man standing on the ground? 3
18.Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of two co-initial
vectors A and B in terms of their magnitudes and angle θ between
them.3
21. Two bodies A and B of masses 10kg and 20kg respectively kept on a
smooth, horizontal surface are tied to the ends of a light string. A
horizontal force F=600N is applied to (i) B (ii)A along the direction of
string.Find the tension in the string in each case with the help of suitable
free body diagrams.3
22. What is meant by positive work, negative work and zero work?
Explain with an example each. 3
23.The blades of a windmill sweep out a circle of area ‘A’. (i) If the wind
flows at a velocity V perpendicular to the circle, what is the mass of the
air passing through it in the time ‘t’?(ii) What is the kinetic energy of the
air? (iii) Assume that the windmill converts 25% of the wind’s energy into
electrical energy, and that A=30m2, V=36km/h and the density of air is
1.2kgm-3. What is the electrical power produced? 3
SECTION D
25. (a) A projectile is fired with a velocity ‘u’ making an angle ‘θ’ with
horizontal.Derive the expressions for (i) time of maximum height (ii) time
of flight (iii) maximum height (iv) horizontal range 5
(OR)
(b)(i) Show that the path of the projectilefired with a velocity ‘u’making
an angle ‘θ’ with horizontal is parabola.
A cricket ball is thrown at a speed 28m/s in a direction 300 above the
horizontal. Calculate (ii) the maximum height (iii) the time taken by the
ball to return to the same level, and (iv)the distance from the thrower to
the point where the ball returns to the same level.
26. (a)(i)What is the need for banking of a road? (ii) Obtain an expression
for the maximum speed with which a vehicle can safely negotiate a
curved road banked at an angle ‘θ’. The co-efficient of friction between
the wheels and the road is ‘µ’.5
(OR)
27) (a) A bob of mass ‘m’ is suspended by a light string of length ‘L’. It is
imparted a horizontal velocity ‘V0’ at the lowest point ‘A’ such that it
completes a semi-circular trajectory in the vertical plane with the string
becoming slack only on reaching the topmost point ‘C’as shown in figure.
Obtain an expression for (i) V0 (ii) the speeds at points B and C; (iii) the
ratio of the kinetic energies KB/KC at B and C. Comment on the nature of
the trajectory of the bob after it reaches the point C. 5

(b) (i) What is an elastic collision? (ii) Write any two characteristics of
elastic collision. (iii) Derive the expressions for the velocities of the two
bodies after an elastic collision in one dimension.
