The document discusses two student essays that provide definition arguments. The first essay argues that the author, Adam Kennedy, should be considered a non-traditional student despite his school's definition requiring students to be over age 25. Adam makes his case through evidence of the school and operational definitions of a non-traditional student. The second essay discusses expectations of professional athletes as role models, arguing they no longer have the same mindset as past athletes who were not solely motivated by money. Both essays are deemed successful as they clearly explain why their definitions should be considered despite typical or established definitions.

After doing the readings for this week I have learned about definition arguments and

showed how to write a definition argument, what needs to be presented in the

argument. These are the significant pieces of information I took away from the chapter
because I thought I knew what was a definition and what this type of argument needs to
be strong. Definition arguments have impacted our culture and society today by helping
each other become more educated on topics that we do not know a lot about. This
information is necessary to know because there will be times where we do not do the
research on certain topics and start to believe what we are hearing from the people
around us. The media is an example of this, they are not telling us the whole truth which
results in us spreading false information.

In my opinion I think that the first definition argument essay was a success considering
what its topic was about. The topic was on why Adam Kennedy is not considered to be
a nontraditional student based on the school’s definition for what this type of student is.
“I am anything but a “traditional” student. In fact, I am one of the most nontraditional
students I know.” According to his counselor at his school had told him since he was not
old enough that he does not qualify. Evidence that Adam had presented was the
schools definition for what a nontraditional student is and the operational definition for
what a non traditional student is. “When I went to Non-Traditional Student Services, I
was told that my case did not fit the definition that the school had established.”
According to the school that Adam was attending to be considered a nontraditional
student they must be over the age of twenty five and Adam was only twenty two. This
definition argument was successful because Adam did a wonderful job on explaining
why he thinks he should be considered a nontraditional student despite the schools
definition for the word.

The second definition argument essay was also a success in my opinion. The second
definition argument essay was about the expectations on professional athletes and if
they should be considered role models. EJ Garr did a wonderful job on explaining how
athletes nowadays do not have the same mindset as ones in the past. “Unfortunately,
athletes today are now what they were decades ago when a paycheck was not the sole
reason they wanted an athletic career.” He explained that some athletes that are
successful are also doing their part in society to try and help out people. He had
mentioned that “Many athletes do not think about how to be a better role model to those
kids that look up to them, how to make their community better, or what they can “give
back” to the less fortunate.” When kids look up to athletes like that and say they would
like to be like them, what do they want to be? Rich? This definition essay was a success
because EJ was able to bring force the differences in today's athletes with the ones in
the past.
