Lab 6 Quantitative Method in Forestry FHM 3112 Faculty of Forestry Universiti Putra Malaysia

This document outlines the instructions and questions for Lab 6 on quantitative methods in forestry. Students are asked to answer questions that test their understanding of key concepts like hypothesis testing, types of errors, test statistics, and applying hypothesis tests to sample data. The questions require setting up null and alternative hypotheses, conducting statistical tests at the 5% significance level, and drawing conclusions about whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypotheses based on the results of the tests. Students are assigned specific questions to answer based on whether their student ID number is odd or even.

LAB 6

QUANTITATIVE METHOD IN FORESTRY

FHM 3112
FACULTY OF FORESTRY
UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA

1. What is hypothesis testing?

2. What is the different between the following?

a) Significance level and confidence level
b) α and β
c) Sampling error and non-sampling error
d) Pre-determine α method and p-value approach
e) Z test and T Test
f) Independent sample and paired sample
g) Type I error and type II error
h) Test statistic and critical point
i) α value and p value
j) Sp and Sd

3. What is the function of critical point?

4. Write the null and alternative hypotheses for each of the following objectives.
a) To test whether the mean time taken by the tourists waiting in line to get the
ticket at the zoo is less than 2 minutes.
b) To test whether the photocopy machine at the office needs repair.
c) To test whether the dbh of a tree in a reserves forest is at most 35 cm.
d) To test whether all 15 plywood in the store room have the same length.
e) To test whether the concentration of BOD in Shah Alam Lake Garden is higher
compare to Seremban Lake Garden
f) To test whether the satisfaction level of two visitor categories are equal.
g) To test whether the mean difference between May and November data for the
quality of water at station S1 is still unchanged.
h) To test whether the total sediment at station M is less than station N.
i) To test whether the mean time taken for two different groups of students to
complete the assignment is different.
j) To determine whether the facilities in the public parks need to upgrade.

5. Serdang Paper Mill Sdn. Bhd. operates a fleet of lorries to transport round logs to
its factory. Monthly mean maintenance costs have been RM75 per lorry. A random
sample of 40 lorries shows a sample mean maintenance cost of RM82.50 per
month, with a sample standard deviation of RM30.00. Management would like a
test to determine whether or not the mean monthly maintenance cost has increased.
What is your conclusion based on the sample mean on RM82.50. Use a 0.05 level
of significance.

6. Bangi Nursery specializes in custom designed landscaping for residential areas. The
labor cost associated with a particular landscaping proposal is estimated based on
the number of plantings of trees, shrubs, and so on associated with the project. For
labor cost estimating purposes, management allows a maximum of 2 hours of labor
time for the planting of a medium size tree. Actual times from a sample of 10
plantings during the past month are as follows (time in hours).

1.9, 2.1, 2.8, 3.0, 2.6, 2.5, 2.8, 3.2, 2.2, 2.5

Using 0.05 level of significance, test the claim that the mean tree planting time is 2
hours or less.

7. The manager of the zoo claims that the time spent by the visitors in the zoo is 90
minutes. A random sample of 16 visitors who went to the zoo produced the average
time of 1.4 hour with a standard deviation of 15 minutes. Assuming the spending
time by the visitors have a normal distribution and using the 5% significance level,
test whether the average time spending in the zoo is not 90 minutes.

8. A big company achieved to get a contract on a piece of land in the forest. The forest
was divided into 2 plots and the dbh average was measured from 25 trees from each
plot. It was found that the dbh for plot 1 have an average of 29.2 cm with variance
of 28.09 cm while dbh for plot 2 have an average of 33.0 cm with variance of 15.21
cm. Assume that the dbh were both normally distributed with equal standard
deviations. Test at 5% significance level whether the dbh for the first plot is equal
to the dbh for second plot.

9. Nestle (M) Bhd. is the main sponsor for dietary program for the orang utans at the
Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre. Weights (in kilograms) for a sample of orang utans
before and after a 6-week introductory program are as follows:

Before 77 79 75 80 78 74
After 81 80 82 79 84 80

Use a 0.05 level of significance to test for the ability of the dietary program to
increase the weight of the orang utans.

10. A factory manufactured 2 kinds of paper, A and B. The manager of the company
stated that both paper had similar purchase weight. Later it was found that the
average weight purchased was 2137.5 tonne and 1892.1 respectively monthly for 25
months with standard deviations of 100 tonne and 50 tonne. Assume that the
weights purchased were both normally distributed with unequal standard
deviations. Test at 5% significance level whether the weights purchased of type A
is heavier than B.

For submission,

For student with an odd matric number, answer question 1, 2 a) to e), 4 a) to e), 5, 8
For student with an even matric number, answer question 2 f) to j), 3, 4 f) to j), 7, 9

Final Date of submission: 2 June 2021
