3 SAT-101 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The SAT-101 is a compact, low data rate, satellite terminal designed to operate over the INMARSAT
satellites using the INMARSAT D+ protocol. With an integral GPS receiver, the SAT-101 provides low
cost satellite communications for applications such as asset tracking, telematics and SCADA.

Four INMARSAT satellites provide Global Coverage with each satellite covering an ‘Ocean Region’
(IOR, AOR-E, AOR-W or POR).

On power on or ‘waking up’, a terminal first tunes to the Bulletin Board channel which contains
information on the traffic channels currently in use. From the traffic channel / service ID mapping
posted on the Bulletin Board, the terminal determines on which traffic channel to expect its messages,
and re-tunes to this channel.

Data rate for the forward channel (to terminal) is approximately 9 user bits per second, with typical
message delivery latency of about 3 minutes.

Return channel (from terminal) information is returned in bursts containing up to 80 user bits of
information. The data rate is approximately 10 user bits per second, with typical message delivery
latency of about 30s (assuming the terminal has already synchronised to the traffic channel).

The SAT-101 consists of three modules, namely:

Antenna
Main module
Battery pack

The terminal is designed such that the battery pack can be optionally attached to the main module.

3.1 Main Module

Figure 1 shows the main module with battery pack attached.

Figure 1 - D+ Terminal: Main Module and Battery Pack

3.2 Battery Pack

The battery pack is a sealed unit containing 10 AA cell NiMH batteries. The pack provides up to 1.2Ah
capacity. Electrical connection with the main module is via contacts on the battery pack mating with
spring loaded probes on the main module. The main module connections remain sealed on removal of
the battery pack.

Figure 2 - D+ Terminal: Main Module with separated Battery Pack

The battery packs are fitted to the main module by means of two M3 screws. When mounting the
complete unit, M4 (No. 8) mounting bolts are used which pass through clearance holes in the battery
pack and main module.

3.3 Antenna
A single antenna is used for GPS receive, D+ receive and D+ transmit.
Cable length: 5m (standard)
Mounting: 4 x M4 (No.8) bolts
Connector: SMA

Cable entry is from the side of the base moulding. Moulded placeholders on the base allow provision
for magnets to be bonded for applications where a magnetic mount is required.

4 INSTALLATION

Installation and service should only be carried out by suitably qualified service
personnel.

Local working practices and regulations for wiring and installations must be adhered to.

4.1 Power Requirements

The equipment is powered from either an integral battery pack or an external DC supply of 9.6V to
30V. The DC supply must be capable of providing a maximum VA of 12W, for example 1A @ 12V or
0.5A @ 24V.

External power is connected via the 25-way D type connector (see section 9.1 for pin connections)

When installing the SAT-101, adequate circuit protection must be provided as required by local
regulations.

IMPORTANT: If connecting to an external battery, the SAT-101 requires an external fast

acting fuse connected in series with the +ve supply at the battery end of the cable.

Input voltage Fuse Rating Minimum wire gauge

9.6 to 30 VDC 1.5A 20 AWG (16/0.2)

4.2 Antenna Installation

It is recommended that cable routing is planned and operation tested before committing to a
permanent installation.

4.2.1 Location
The antenna should be located with an unobstructed, clear view of the sky.
The antenna should be mounted on a flat horizontal surface.
Consider the position of the satellites. The Inmarsat satellites are in geostationary orbits
above the equator. (i.e., in the Northern hemisphere the satellites are located to the south,
in the Southern hemisphere the satellites are located to the North.) The further away from
the Equator the SAT-101 is, the lower the degree of elevation will be above the horizon.
If you plan to install the antenna in a partially enclosed environment, test operation before
committing to a permanent installation.
On vehicles, the antenna should be located on the highest point possible, free from
obstructions and safe from damage during normal operation of the host vehicle.
For installations exposed to shock and/or vibration, use a mounting scheme that isolates the
antenna from the excessive shock and/or vibration.
Choose a location that is not near radar installations, other satellite communication
equipment, and/or microwave dishes to prevent RF jamming.
Avoid mounting on hot surface.

4.2.2 Antenna Cable

As standard, the antenna is supplied with 5m of cable. If a longer cable is required contact
your equipment supplier or authorised dealer for advice.
When routing the cable avoid sharp edges and pinches.
Be aware that the minimum static bend radius of the antenna cable is 15mm.
Mechanical pressure on the cable may cause performance degradation or even a short
circuit.

Page 10 of 22 © Satamatics Ltd.

MAN-0013 Issue 2 SAT-101 User Manual
4.2.3 Mounting
If possible, try the installation before drilling any holes or fixing cable.
The antenna may be mounted using M4 (No. 8) screws and nuts or by screwing directly into
the mounting surface using appropriate fixings.
If using M4 screw with nuts:
Mark the location of the three mounting holes.
Drill three 4.5mm mounting holes.
Depending on the installation, a hole may also be required to pass the antenna cable
through. (This hole should be a minimum of 10mm diameter, at a distance from the
antenna to ensure the 15mm minimum bend radius of the cable is not compromised.)
Secure the antenna in place using M4 screws and nuts - Do not over tighten.
If screwing directly to the mounting surface:
Secure the antenna using screws appropriate to the mounting surface - Do not over
tighten.

4.3 Main Module Installation

4.3.1 Location
The Main Module can be mounted either indoors or outdoors. Indoor installation is preferable as this
gives added protection from adverse weather conditions. If mounted outdoors, note:

The SAT-101 main module is only weatherproof if the interface connector is appropriately
mated.
If possible the SAT-101 should be mounted with the interface cables facing down.

4.3.2 Power & control cable

Use only shielded cables for connecting to peripherals. Using shielded cables ensures that the
appropriate EMC classifications are maintained.

4.3.3 Mounting
Record ISN number of the unit for future reference.
Mark the location of the four mounting holes.
Drill four 4.5mm mounting holes.
Secure the unit in place using the M4 (No. 8) screws and nuts - do not over tighten

If the battery pack is not fitted, ensure that the battery pack connection cover is in place to prevent
damage to the battery terminals.

It is recommended that the unit be mounted with the connectors facing downwards when mounting
outdoors.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT MOUNT OUTDOORS IF THE BATTERY PACK IS TO BE USED

AS THIS COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE.

4.4 Applying Power

Before connecting the SAT-101 to an external voltage source ensure that the polarity is correct and
the voltage source (at the input to the SAT-101) is between 9.6V and 30V. See section 9.1 for
connector pin out description.

Check the circuit, in particular fuses and/or circuit protection devices.

Always ensure that the ground connection is connected at the same time or before power is applied.

4.5 Operational Check

With the SAT-101 and antenna in position, apply power to the unit and monitor the indicator (see
section 11). After five or six minutes the indicator should be showing that the Traffic Channel has been
acquired.

Contact your application service provider or authorised dealer with regards to sending and receiving
messages.

5 FUNCTIONALITY
For full functional details on the SAT-101 contact your authorised dealer.

6 MODES OF OPERATION
SLEEP
Extremely low power mode. D+ and GPS functions are switched off. IDLE mode is entered

2. 5.5 hours operation – For applications where the SAT-101 is in continuous RECEIVE (D+ and
GPS), transmitting no more than once every 10 minutes.
3. 30 to 40 hours operation – For applications where the SAT-101 is receiving GPS only (e.g.
periodically checking a geofence)
4. 400 GPS position checks (e.g. against a geofence) for applications that place the SAT-101 into
SLEEP mode between checks.

For example, taking case 1 above, using the 1.2Ah battery pack will provide approximately 120
transmissions.

10.2 Battery Charging

Battery pack voltage is monitored and can be reported to the user either locally or via the D+ satellite
link.

10.2.1 Battery Charging from Main DC input

Charging of the integral battery pack is managed internally with Fast charging or Trickle charging
modes selected as appropriate.

10.2.2 Battery Charging from Solar Panel input

Charging of the integral battery pack from the Solar panel input is managed internally.

11 INTERPRETING THE INDICATOR

A single status indicator is provided on the SAT-101. The indicator goes through 4 states every 2
seconds generating the patterns in the table below

State 1 State 2 State 3 State 4 Meaning

RED RED RED RED Fault
RED OFF OFF OFF D+ OFF
RED OFF GREEN OFF Acquiring Bulletin Board
GREEN GREEN RED RED Demodulating Bulletin Board
GREEN OFF GREEN OFF Acquiring Traffic Channel
GREEN GREEN GREEN OFF Demodulating Traffic
Channel
GREEN OFF OFF OFF Idle part of TC Frame
ORANGE ORANGE ORANGE ORANGE Transmitting

Normally, from power on, the indicator will go from flashing red (D+ OFF) through to flashing green as
the SAT-101 first acquires the Bulletin Board and subsequently the Traffic Channel. From power on to
demodulating the Traffic Channel may take up to 7 minutes.

NOTE: The indicator can be disabled (off state) or enabled via script control. The indicator may
therefore not come on when power is applied. Contact your authorised dealer for details of any
script that may have been programmed into the SAT-101.
