KWS - Oas

The document discusses two computer applications: 1) The Knowledge Work System (KWS) is designed to help knowledge workers capture and organize work information to complete tasks more efficiently. It integrates information management, workflow, and other tools. KWS also supports collaborative work and allows task assignment and status updates across groups. 2) The Office Automation System (OAS) uses electronic tools to facilitate communication and improve productivity. It supports work within an organization through features like email, voicemail, fax, and video conferencing. The OAS aims to assist administrative functions and make communication easier both internally and externally.

Knowledge Work System (KWS)

Knowledge Work System is a computer application designed to help "knowledge workers"

(professionals who use information as their primary input and the main distilled information
product) to capture and organize activity work information, and to learn, prioritize, and carry out
their tasks more efficiently and effectively. KWS integrates methods and technologies from the
disciplines of information management, workflow, job scheduling, software agents, and work
measurement into "Environmental Performance Support." KWS improves productivity by
providing the specific task information needed, and by associate all the automated tools, software
agents, and multimedia document references needed to complete a specific task.
KWS is a "groupware" designed for use by collaborative working groups. Processes can be
assigned across the organization to support matrixed management. Knowledge workers can
assign tasks to themselves, to another knowledge worker, or to a group of knowledge workers.
KWS improves workgroup coordination by allowing knowledge workers to pick up and update
milestones, task completions, and status priority information.

Knowledge worker system role

1. Keep the organization up to date in the appropriate knowledge with the development of the
outside world both in technology, science and knowledge, social concepts and cultural arts
2. Acting as an internal consultant in the area is good for changes and opportunities
3. Act as change agents: evaluate, initialize, propose a change project

Example of Knowledge Work System Computer

 Aided Design (CAD) / Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Information Systems
automate the creation or revision of the design by using advanced software graphics.
Software presents appropriate controls devoted to industrial design and manufacturing
 Virtual Reality Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML)

Office Automation System (OAS)
Office automation System is the use of electronic tools to facilitate formal and informal
communication especially related to information communication with people inside and outside
the company to improve work productivity. Initially the use of office automation or office
automation was limited to industrial factories only. However, nowadays its use has spread to
office circles. Office automation began in 1964, when IBM marketed a machine called Magnetic
Tape / Selectric Typewriter ( MT/ST) that is a typewriter that can type words that have been
recorded in magnetic tape automatically.
The Office Automation System (OAS) supports the work of a company at large, usually used to
improve the flow of work and communication between workers, no matter whether the worker is
in the same location or not.
The objectives of the office automation system are:
 Assisting sectarian activities and administrative employees
 Increase productivity
 Helps facilitate formal and informal communication of employees inside and outside the
organization
 Reduce work stoppages
 Reduction of equipment costs
Office automation system users are usually people who work inside the office. Office automation
users are divided into 4 categories, namely:
1. Manager
2. Professional
3. Secretary
4. Administrative Officer
These are the example of Office automation system :
 Electronic Mail, correspondence communication via electronic / internet.
 Voice Mailing System, a voice communication that can be stored in memory using your
phone or computer.
 Voice Information Services, is a useful tool to provide answers about the information
needed by phone users. The information provided is only the information that has been
provided, where the user is guided by a menu in the form of sound as well. Example
no.109 for phone billing information.
 Fax Information Services, similar to voice inf.services, but information sent in the form
of faxes. FIS can also use computers.
 Video Conference, is a facility to talk to more than one interlocutor through video, either
in the form of full motion or freeze frame.
