FIELD EXPERIENCE C: LEADER ACTIVITY 2

For my last few hours of observations, I was able to observe my principal doing many

different activities. Some of my observations included sitting in a training that was led by the

principal, watching her work with challenging students and leading faculty meetings.

During the training the principal introduced a new reading assessment (Development

Reading Assessment Program). As she led the training she displayed effective leadership by

supporting a new assessment to promote student’s academic success. (“Professional Standards

for Educational Leaders,” 2015). While she discussed why we need this program, she displayed

data that was collected from our school as well as the rest of South Carolina. She indicated how

important our data collections is and how we need to use this as a baseline to improve our

students learning. (PSEL Standard 4). While she led the training, I respected how much time she

put forth to learn the program before training her staff. She was very determined to enhance our

teachers’ knowledge in this new assessment to improve our student success.

While observing her working with children in her office, I noticed that she provides them

with her full attention and accepts the responsibility for the child’s academic success and well-

being. She treated every child with fairness and spoke to them with integrity. “Effective

educational leaders strive for equity of educational opportunity and culturally responsive

practices to promote each student’s academic success and well-being.” (“PSEL” 2015). It was

nice to see the principal working with students one on one.

During the Faculty meeting, my principal displayed a caring and supportive school nature

for the school community. All staff feel accepted, valued and trusted. When members of the

school spoke, the principal treated them with respect and took every question in consideration.

She did not discriminate and made sure all faculty members felt confident when they left. It was

enjoyable to see how every staff member participated and how everyone was fully engaged with

the person who was speaking. I want to make sure my staff look and act the same way to me as a

leader.

In the future, I want to make the well-being and success of students the fundamental

value in all decision-making and actions for my school. (NASSP 2020) Student are the center of

learning. It’s important for my staff to feel the same way. I want my staff to try their hardest to

work on achieving goals with their students. I want them to think outside the box when working

with students that are more of a challenge. If they need help, I want them to come to me

whenever necessary. It’s important for me, as a leader, to build a positive relationship with all

staff members and make sure they feel supported and cared for. I want to make sure my school

community has a strong relationship and works as one whole unit. I will provide open ends of

communication for all staff to ask questions and work together to provide answers. It’s important

for all members of the school to show equality, fairness and kindness to all students and staff.

It’s important my team receives all the guidance they need to feel comfortable and be successful.

Things get difficult in school, it’s important for all members to know I will work with

them to create a plan of action. I want everyone to view our mission statement and vision

statement, that way they can help students in all ways. If everyone has the same vision, the

school will be able to continue to improve and students will be able to achieve more success.
