Contrast between Modern and Post-

Modern Literature

The English literature is mainly divided into modern and post-modern literature.
The modern literature actually refers to literature written before scientific and
technological advancements. It actually starts from the 17th century. The post-
modern literature refers to the literature after Second World War, not immediately
but after a successive series of historical, cultural and technological changes. It
basically starts after the transition from feudalism to capitalism.
Every author has its own style of writing both in modern and post-modern times
but, both literatures has a lot of differences. The modern literature is not very
realistic while post-modern literature is more leaned towards realism. The modern
literature adheres to hegemonic values while post-modern literature contests it.
Topics like secularism, feminism, and equal rights are more prominent in post-
modern literature. The modern literature focuses more on the author and are self-
contained while post-modern literature rather focuses on reader and is very open
and intertextual. The modern literature has very idiosyncratic language while in
post-modern literature, the language is simple and clear but the structure is very
complex. Also, post-modern literature is a collective voice of a whole community.
As a summary, modern literature is very fictional and unrealistic while post-
modern literature focuses on scientific, logical and realistic topics.
