C. Learning Objectives
After participating in a series of learning activities, students can :
1. Determine the perimeter of a rectangle.
2. Determine the rectangular area formula through a square formula.

D. Learning Materials
The Perimeter of The Rectangle
The perimeter of a flat figure is the sum of the lengths of the sides that border it. So to
calculate the circumference of a rectangle can be determined by adding up the length of each
side of the rectangle.
b

a c

Perimeter of ABCD ¿ AB+ BC +CD + DA

¿ a=b=c=d.
So, the perimeter of the ABCD Rectangle is a+ b+c +d . With a=c as the wide side and
b=d as a long side.
So in general the formula the perimeter of a rectangle can be written as :

P=2(length+ width) or
P=2( l+ w).
The Area of The Rectangle
The area of the rectangle can be found by multiplying the longer side by the other side shorter
ones. Mathematically written :
Proof of the Rectangular Area Formula
Consider the following rectangle (a+ b).
This square can be divided into 4 flat shapes as shown below.

From the picture it appears that the large square was divided into 2 different squares
(builds 2 and 3) and 2 identical rectangles (builds 1 and 4). Large square area can be
found by the formula : L=side × side, with side length ( a+ b ).
The same formula applies to square 2 with the length of the sides a and square 3 with the
length of the side b.
While builds 1 and 4 are rectangles that we will prove that the area is a × b.
L=L1 + L2 + L3+ L4
(a+ b)2=L1+ a2 +b2 + L4
a 2+b 2+ 2 ab=L1 +a2 +b 2+ L4
In both segments there is the same value a 2+b 2, so that both segments can be reduced

by the same value a 2+b 2. So it is obtainded :

2 ab=L1+ L 4
Furthermore, because L1 + L4, then :
2 ab=L1+ L1
2 ab=2 L1
ab=L1
At build 1 above, 𝑎 is length and 𝑏 is width. So, it is proven that the formula is broad
rectangle is :

A=length× width
A=l× w
