3 Levels of Content: GEC 006-CE22S5 - Art Appreciation

3.3 Levels of Content

For the last topic in the module, let's focus on levels of content. Art asks questions and conveys
meaning. It expresses ideas, uncovers truths, manifests what is beautiful, and tells stories. In this
unit, we will begin to explore the meaning behind particular works of art within the context of various
styles and cultures.

Content
Content is the meaning or message of an art. The meaning a viewer of painting in a museum or a
student enrolled in Art Appreciation may utilize different levels of content (i.e. meaning).

First is the factual content. This content (Caslib et al., 2018) is a basic level of meaning because it is
derived from the decipherable forms in the works of art and “understanding how these elements
relate to one another” (p. 49). Other authors (Panisan et al., 2018) refer to it as the “literal statement
or narrative content in the work that can be directly apprehended because the objects presented are
easily recognized” (p. 13).

Next is the conventional content which “pertains to the acknowledged interpretation of the artwork
using motifs, signs, symbols, and other cyphers as bases of its meaning. These conventions are
established through time, strengthened by recurrent use and wide acceptance by its viewers or
audience and scholars who study them” (Caslib et al., 2018, p. 50).

Then we have subjective content. Subjective content refers to “the individual meaning deliberately
and instinctively expressed by the artist using a personal symbolism that stems form his own alliance
with certain objects, actions, or colors with past experiences. It becomes fully understandable if the
artist gives details of what he really means; otherwise, it would be interpreted differently by the
viewers, or it would communicate multiple meanings to its varied audience” (Panisan et al., 2018, p.
14)
