 To serve as a comprehensive course in non ferrous extraction and refining for an
undergraduate in the metallurgical & materials engineering.

General Introduction to Pyro, Electro and Hydro Metallurgy - Extractive Metallurgy of
Aluminium - Extractive Metallurgy of Copper and Tin - Extractive Metallurgy of Gold and Silver
- Extractive Metallurgy of Magnesium, Lead and Zinc -Extractive Metallurgy of Nickel and
Cobalt
Expected Outcome.
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
i. Describe and explain processes and reactors for extraction and refining of metals.
ii. Explain processes based on an advanced thermodynamic perspective.
iii. Describe and explain material and energy flows related to extraction of metals.
iv. Describe and explain ore treatment techniques.
v. Plan and carry out experimental work related to extraction and refining of non ferrous
metals
vi. Present results and evaluation of experimental work in oral and written presentation

exchange. Electrolysis of aqueous solutions and fuses salts, Cell
design, Recovery of metal values by Cementation, Electro-winning,

Extractive Metallurgy of Aluminium
2.1 Occurrence of Bauxite. 2.2 Bayer's process for production of
II alumina. 2.3 Alternatives to Bayer's process. 2.4 Hall-Heroult
process-conventional and new materials for construction of
aluminum reduction cell, nature of electrolyte. 2.5 Electrolysis of 7 15%
alumina with emphasis on physico-chemical principles and
secondary-reactions, factors affecting current efficiency. 2.6
Alternatives to Hall-Heroult process. 2.7 Refining of aluminum.

Extractive Metallurgy of Copper and Tin 15%
3.1 Copper: (a). Occurrence of copper ores. Rosting. Matte-
smelting, Converting and Refining process as applied to copper
production and their physico-chemical aspects. (b). Single step and

production of primary copper. Recovery of copper from copper
slag. 3.2 Tin: Occurrence of tin, various methods of extraction of
tin from its ores and other sources. Uses of tin
Extractive Metallurgy of Gold and Silver 15%
4.1 (a). Occurrence of gold and silver. Various methods for
production of gold and silver from their ores and other sources. 4.2

such as Copper Anode Mud, Red Mud, Zinc dross and electrolytic
