LessonPlan Unit1 Lesson 3 Grade 5

This lesson plan outlines a 60-minute lesson to teach students about disk space and capacity by differentiating between bits and bytes, identifying different data measurement units like kilobyte and megabyte, and developing an understanding of how disk space works; the lesson will include a review of binary systems, a video explanation of exponential values, and an activity to write names in binary code followed by formative assessment.

LESSON PLAN
Unit Title: Computer Data and Information
Suggested Time Allotment: 60 minutes
Suggested Number of Session: 1

I. OBJECTIVES
This lesson will provide you the concept of disk space and capacity.
Specific Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
1. differentiate bit and byte;
2. identify the different Data Measurement; and
3. develop deeper understanding of disk space.

ISTE Standards: The learners develop;

Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce
creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Computational Thinker
Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the
power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Content/Topic: Disk Space and Capacity
Concepts:
i. Bit is short for ‘binary digit’ and it is the smallest unit of data in a computer.
ii. Byte is binary number made of eight bits.
iii. Kilobyte is a collection of about 1000 bytes.
iv. Megabyte is about 1 million bytes or about 1000 kilobytes.
v. Gigabyte is about 1 billion bytes or 1 thousand megabytes.
vi. Terabyte is about 1000 gigabytes or roughly 1 trillion bytes.
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
Materials/Equipment:
i. PowerPoint Presentation
ii. Computer

IV. PROCEDURES
ELICIT
The teacher will ask the following questions:
1. What is Binary System?
2. What are the two symbols in binary?

The teacher will show a video about mathematical story of

exponentials and an incremental amount of rice.
A. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71yuH365Rug

It tells the fictional story of the invention of the game of chess. In

this story, the inventor is granted any request by the Emperor he
works for. He asks only for this: a grain of rice on the first square of
his chessboard, to be followed the next day by two grains on the
next square, then four on the next and so forth doubling the amount
each day until the board is filled. The Emperor is glad to grant his
request, but soon realizes that there is not enough rice in the entire
world to fulfill it!
B. Establishing a purpose for the
lesson ENGAGE
The teacher will present the objectives for the day.

C. Presenting examples/instances of Ask the students "Which would you rather have, two million pesos
the new lesson right now, or a peso coin doubled every day for a month? (30 days)"
Give them some time to work out the math and then have them
compare answers and how they arrived at their solutions.
D. Discussing new concepts and
practicing new skills #1 EXPLORE
Now point out to them that this is how computers can make large
numbers out of simple bits that only have two values. As they create

possible value of the total number. Computers put 8 bits together to
make a byte, which has 256 possible values.

EXPLAIN
The teacher will explain the following:
1. What is Bit?
F. Developing mastery (leads to 2. What are the common binary lengths?
Formative Assessment 3) 3. How to convert Bit to Byte and vice versa
4. Why is 1 byte equal to 8 bit?
5. What is ASCII sets?
6. What are the common data measurements?

G. Finding practical applications of

concepts and skills in daily
living Computers don’t understand our language. They only understand
machine language, or binary, which consists of ones and zeros. The
Control Unit (part of the CPU) changes programming instructions
into binary by turning electrical switches on and off. When
electricity is present, it represents a one. The absence of electricity
represents a zero. Each one or zero is a bit. Eight bits, or
combinations of ones and zeros, represent a letter such as A. Eight
bits are called a byte. Each capital letter, lowercase letter, number,
punctuation mark, and various symbols has its own unique
combination of ones and zeros. The binary alphabet is shown below.

H. Making generalizations and

abstractions about the lesson

Activity:
Using the binary alphabet, write your name below placing only one
letter in each box. Then write the binary code for each alphabetic
letter in the box below. Remember to capitalize the first letters of
your first and last name.

EVALUATE
I. Evaluating learning
Answer activities provided in the book after every lesson.

EXTEND

application or remediation

V. REMARKS
To the teachers:
Did I attain my objectives? ______________________________________________________
Did the 75% of students attained passing rate? Why and Why not?_______________________
How will the supervisor/head help you in this matter? __________________________________
