a. background of the Research
1. English department students as the candidates of english teachers in the future must be
able to use english well for both oral and written.
2. Interactions must be delivered well by the teacher so the students will understand the
lesson well.
3. In delivering the materials, sometimes the teachers switch and mix their language
(English, Indonesian language, or event local language) in speaking to the students in
the classroom.
4. Teachers should aim at creating a pure foreign language environment since they are the
sole linguistic models for the students and that code-switching will result in negative
transfer in foreign language learning.1
5. To analyze the effectiveness of using code-switching and code-mixing should be
analyzed as information for the teachers what the best ways of giving oral lesson to the
students.
6. There is limited research on the code-switching and code-mixing used by the English
teachers in classroom, especially for the English teachers in SMP Attayyibah Semurup.
That is why this research is important to be conducted.
b. Purpose of the Research
1. To figure out the comparison proportion between English and other languages used by
teacher in teaching English lesson in the classroom.
2. To see the form of code-switching used by the teachers.
3. To find the reasons why does the teacher use code-switching and code-mixing in class
communication.
c. Research questions
1. How is the comparison proportion between English and other languages used by teacher
in teaching English lesson in the classroom in SMP Attayyibah Semurup?
2. How is the form of code-switching used by the teachers in SMP Attayyibah Semurup?
3. Why does the teacher use code-switching and code-mixing in class communication used
by the teachers in SMP Attayyibah Semurup?

d. Review of Related Literature
1. Douglass Brown says that Interaction is the heart of communication where
communication is all about.2
2. Kamwangamalu defines code-switching as the intersential alternating use of two or
more languages or varieties of a language, in the same speech situation.3
3. Mahootian states that Codes-mixing is a linguistic phenomenon commonly occurring in
bi- and multilingual speech communities where the person mixes the two or more
language in a single sentence.4
4. In Indonesia, English is seen as foreign language and this language is taught in formal
study since elementary school until university level. Khaerunnisa states that tendency of
multilingual to switch the codes happened in many level of school in Indonesia since
switching language allows the teachers to deliver the English materials easier to the
students rather than using pure and fully English during the teaching and learning
process in the classroom.5
e. Method of the Research

The design of this research will be descriptive. There will be three English teachers of
SMP Attayyibah Semurup that will be attended. Each teacher will be attended for three times in
the same class. It will done to see the code-switching and code-mixing used by the English
teachers in the the classroom. The population will be all English teachers in SMP Attayyibah
Semurup. The sample will be total sampling because all teachers will be researched.

The instruments of the research will be classroom observation by recording the teaching
and learning process. The second instrument will be interview. For the observation, the
researcher will record the interaction by using hand phone, as well as taking notes to help the
researcher to create the transcription of the interaction. Later, the data will be tabulated and
analyzed. The interview will be done to some students to see the interactions based on their
experience.

The data analysis will be done by writing down the transcript of the classroom
interaction. After that, it will be classified into code-switching and code-mixing. The appearance
of the code-switching among sentences is defined by looking at the code used by the teachers.
When the teacher moves from one code to another which is identified as turn relevant place or
for a whole and complete sentence, it is regarded as a code-switching. Therefore, the discussion
will take part in why the teacher does such thing in order to find out why the code-switching
happens and why the teacher does so.
