“History Lesson”

Observation Interpretation
The author of the poem is of an Indigenous The poem could be out something that she has seen or

The relationship between the Europeans and The Indigenous people were willing to share what they
the Indigenous had with the Europeans, but eventually the Europeans
got greedy and everything was taken from them. For
example;
“Out of the belly of Christopher’s ship a mob bursts
Running in all direction”. These lines indicate the
beginning of everything being taken away from the
Indigenous people.

“green paper faces of a smiling English lady Referring to the twenty dollar bill, this is an example of
an illusion to knowing who and what they are talking
about.

The theme of the poem The Europeans that settled in North America thought
they were civilized and that they were doing great for
“uncivilized” Indigenous people. The Europeans
settlers actually ended up destroying more than one
great civilisation.

The poem represents a timeline The poem represents a timeline of the significant
events that gives us a glimpse of the past, revealing
what occurred when the European settlers came to
North America, and how they contributed and
interacted with each other.
Being told by the point of view of the Indigenous

“Father mean well” This is called “Pigeon English”. Early Europeans spoke
to the indigenous as if they were infants and couldn't
process the language.

“Glimpsed in a garden An allusion and a repetition. It reflects the loss of their


forever closed green world.
Forever lost”
