WEEK 1
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
Electrical Supplies, Materials, and Tools

Background Information for Learners: Households have progressed to consider electricity essential for daily living.
From powering bulbs to give light to fans to comfort a hot sunny day, Electricity is slowly becoming a need to
providing help through our technology. In this module, you are going to learn basic knowledge and techniques in
ELECTRONICS INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE. This may be important for your future career goal (like becoming
an electrical technician/engineer) and for everyday tasks that you can help your guardians including basic electrical
problems encountered at your household.

What are the common electrical tools and equipment needed in electrical?

TOOLS USED IN ELECTRICAL

SCREWDRIVERS
SCREWDRIVERS FUNCTION
SCREWDRIVERS: are hand tools specifically designed to insert and tighten, or to loosen and remove screws. The
screwdriver has two main parts:
1. Handle which is what the technician hold to manipulate/rotate
2. Tip of which is shaped in to fit a particular type of screw head.
- SLOTTED/FLAT SCREWDRIVER has negative
shaped tip.
- It is used to drive or fasten negative shaped
screw heads. (-)

SLOTTED/FLAT SCREWDRIVER
- PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER has a positive shaped
tip.
- It is used to drive or fasten positive shaped
screw heads. (+)
- It is a screwdriver that could take greater grip
(mas mahigpit na kapit) and could provide
tighter fastenings.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER
- STUBBY SCREWDRIVER has a shorter handle to
fit tight spaces.
- Set of small screwdrivers composed of slotted
and Phillips screwdrivers.
- It is used to drive or fasten negative and
positive shaped small screw heads. (-) (+)
- Example: If a regular screwdriver is too long to
fit in the case of the device, stubby screwdrivers
must be used to drive screws inside.
STUBBY SCREWDRIVER

- ALLEN SCREWDRIVER is used to turn loose/tight

a hexagonal head

SAFETY REMINDER:
*BE CAREFUL in using screwdrivers. It’s sharp tip can
cause injuries if not used properly (NOT FOR
ALLEN SCREWDRIVER HORSEPLAYING)
*Use screwdrivers specifically for their purpose. Using
them to substitute for other tool may lead to injury (ex:
NOT for drilling, stirring, prying)

HAMMERS
HAMMERS FUNCTION
HAMMERS: are hand tools used in pounding or pulling out nails. They are made of hard steel, wood , or rubber. The
hammer has two main parts:
1. Handle which is what the technician hold to swing and pound the hammer
2. Head of which is made of hard material to hit/pound a material onto a surface. The form of the head of the
hammer shows its function.

- CLAW HAMMER is the most general/common

type of hammer found in households. The head
is made of hard steel with a flat area for
pounding nails into the surface, and a claw for
pulling nails from the surface. It has a steel head
so it can apply greater force.

CLAW HAMMER

- MALLET HAMMER has a head made of lighter

material (rubber, wood, etc) to avoid damage to
the tool it is pounding. It has a rubber/wood
head so it can apply controlled force and avoid
damaging tool.

MALLET HAMMER (RUBBER HEAD)

- BALLPEEN HAMMER is used for pounding tools

and chisels or flattening/shaping other materials
(wood, sheet of metal, etc) The ballpeen head
has a flat side for pounding tools and a round
side for various purposes.

SAFETY REMINDER:
*BE CAREFUL in using hammers. Its heavy weight can
BALLPEEN HAMMER cause injuries if not used properly. Seek for the
supervision of your guardian if necessary.

PLIERS
PLIERS FUNCTION
PLIERS: are hand tools used for cutting, twisting, bending, holding, and gripping wires and cables.

- LONG NOSE PLIERS is used for holding, bending,

and stretching the wire.
- Example: twisting metal wires (alambre) holding
when connecting wires.
LONG NOSE PLIERS

- SIDE CUTTER/SIDE CUTTING PLIERS is used for

cutting the materials of the wire .
(copper/rubber)

SIDE CUTTER/SIDE CUTTING PLIERS

- COMBINATION PLIERS has both

a sharp edge for cutting
a flat surface for holding
(combination of long nose and side cutter)
- This can be used for several electrical tasks.
COMBINATION PLIERS
- WIRE STRIPPER is a pair of opposing blades
much like scissors or wire cutters. The addition
of a center notch makes it easier to cut the
insulation without cutting the wire. Wires are
inserted in the center notch to remove the
rubber (insulation) without cutting the wire.

SAFETY REMINDER:
WIRE STRIPPER *BE CAREFUL in handling sharp tools
*Wear appropriate PPEs (Personal Protective
Equipment) when working with sharp tools. Seek for the
supervision of your guardian if necessary.

OTHER HAND TOOLS

OTHER HAND TOOLS FUNCTION

- ELECTRICIAN’S KNIFE is used to remove the

insulation (rubber) of the wire.
- Example: In the absence of a wire stripper,
ELECTRICIAN’S KNIFE CAREFULLY cut the rubber of wire and peel off.

- PORTABLE ELECTRIC DRILL is a drilling machine

used for boring hole(s) in surfaces like concrete
wall/wood, metal sheets etc.

PORTABLE ELECTRIC DRILL

- HACKSAW is used to cut metal materials

(conduits, armored wire, etc.)

SAFETY REMINDER:
*BE CAREFUL in using hacksaw. Its sharp edges can
cause wound injuries if not used properly. Seek for the
HACKSAW supervision of your guardian if necessary.

SAFETY REMINDER: For young technicians like you, it is important to always wear PPEs (Personal Protective
Equipment) like gloves, goggles, properly fit clothing to protect you from further injuries (like ground, burns, cuts)
You should also seek for guardian supervision when working with tools that can cause danger.

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS USED IN ELECTRICAL

Electrical materials and supplies have different function. Electrical materials and supplies serve as the
component for electrical circuits. Electrical materials are developed and constructed for a special purpose such as to:
1. Control the flow of current in an electrical circuit
2. Carry electrical current from the source to the load or apparatus
3. Organize wires by holding and securing wires from houses/buildings
4. Protects houses/buildings from destruction/damage

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS FUNCTION

ELECTRICAL WIRE: is a material in electrical where the electricity mainly flows to power a load. The wire has two
main parts:
1. Conductor – where the electricity flows (example: copper)
2. Insulation – where electricity cannot flow (example: rubber) This covers the conductor so it won’t cause
electrical danger like grounding.

- SOLID WIRE is made of a single solid strand of

copper or aluminium wire. These are used in
wiring installation inside and outside the
SOLID WIRE buildings.
- Less flexible and is prone to breaking when bent

- STRANDED WIRE is made of multiple strands

joined together to make a single wire.
- Multiple strands of wire allows flexibility.

STRANDED WIRE

- FLAT CORD WIRE is commonly used in extension

cord assembly. It is two stranded wires joined in
FLAT CORD WIRE a single path.
CONVINENCE OUTLET: is a component that connects household appliances to electrical source. It acts as an outlet
of electrical energy for current consuming appliances. It is where the plug of an appliance is inserted.

- FLUSH TYPE OUTLET has its connectors

exposed. It is used for installation of outlet on
walls. The exposed connectors makes it easy to
assemble wires to connect to electricity source
- SURFACE TYPE OUTLET has its connectors
covered. It is commonly used for extension cord
so the connectors and wires will be covered
FLUSH TYPE SURFACE TYPE safely inside the case and won’t cause hazard
(ground, burns, etc.) when operated.
CONVINIENCE OUTLET

- PLUG is a device inserted to an outlet to

conduct electric current. A flat cord is
connected to the plug to allow electric flow to
the device.
- Also referred to as the male plug.

PLUG
SWITCH: is a component that connects and disconnects the flow of the electric current in a circuit.
- FLUSH TYPE SWITCH has its connectors
exposed. It is used for installation of switch on
walls. The exposed connectors makes it easy to
assemble wires to connect to electricity source
- SURFACE TYPE SWITCH has its connectors
covered so the wires will be covered safely
inside the case and won’t cause hazard (ground,
FLUSH TYPE SURFACE TYPE burns, etc.) when operated.
LAMP HOLDER: is a component that holds the lamp/bulb. This is also referred to as RECEPTACLES
- FLUSH TYPE LAMP HOLDER has its connectors
exposed. It is used for installation of wires on
the ceiling. The exposed connectors makes it
easy to assemble wires to connect the light to
electricity source.
- SURFACE TYPE SWITCH has its connectors
covered so the wires will be covered safely
inside the case and won’t cause hazard (ground,
FLUSH TYPE SURFACE TYPE burns, etc.) when operated.
PROTECTIVE COMPONENTS: are components that shuts itself down and disconnects the circuit during electric
current problems (ex: overload, short circuit) to protect other components
- FUSE is a cylinder shape component that blows
itself off and cut the current when overload
/short circuit happens.
- CIRCUIT BREAKER is a component that (like
fuse) automatically blows and cuts the current
when overload /short circuit happens.
- Fuse and Circuit breaker can be replaced after
FUSE CIRCUIT BREAKER fixing the electrical problems.
CONDUITS/PIPES: are PVC materials (Polyvinylchloride) that serve as passage of wires, cover and organize them in
place. (Example: so they don’t entangle with one another, so circuits outside the building can be protected during
weather conditions) Generally protects wires from damage.

- CONDUITS/PIPES serve as the passage of

electrical wires for protection and insulation.
- Can be in a form of metal/plastic.
- Flexible conduits are used in positioning
conduits in curved angles.
- Conduits/pipes can be used in installing wires
outside of the buildings to protect from rain.
Metal/plastic conduit Flexible conduit

CONDUITS/PIPES

- CONNECTOR is used to attach conduits to the

junction or storage boxes. This is to lock the
conduits to the boxes.
- In the absence of flexible conduits, plastic
conduits can be cut and attached to the
connector to position in angles.
Plastic Metal

CONNECTOR

- CLAMP is used in holding and anchoring

conduits in proper places.

CLAMP
WIRE BOXES: are where wires are organized and connected to other flush components (ex: switch, plug, lamp
holder) This can also be in metal or plastic form

- JUNCTION BOX is octagon shaped box where

the connections and joints of the electrical wires
are being done.
- This is where flush type lamp holder is attached.

JUNCTION BOX
- UTILITY BOX is rectangular shaped box where
the connections and joints of the electrical wires
are being done.
- This is where flush type switch/convenience
outlets are attached.
