The Development of A GIS
Sustainability Assessment”
Summary
This article focuses on indicators of sustainability and assessment. The author of this article
stated that it is a worldwide issue to secure long-term economical growth while minimizing
negative environmental effects. Humanity is facing multiple challenges in terms of unsustainable
resource use, which include environmental damage, pollution, climate change, poverty,
starvation, and waterlogging. We risk absolving coming generations of any possibility to meet
their own needs if we do not protect the natural human health and the environment while
maintaining equity in meeting our needs. From last many years, there has been a increasing
emphasis on the long-term viability of city building-blocks. Higher education institutions are
among these building blocks. University campuses are primarily concerned with sustainability.
As a result of the growing number of resources and energy utilization, different operational
activities, and resulting pollution, campus sustainability has become an extremely important
topic.
According to the article, the GIS model has a wide range of applications in sustainability
assessment and has been used to assess the sustainability of a metropolitan region. This GIS-
based model was used to evaluate campus environmental sustainability at Saudi Arabia's “King
Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) while Indicator availability, determination
of operational parameters of the KFUPM academic campus, as well as their model development,
environmental sustainability assessment of campus parameters” and measuring units, were all
part of the process.
This model incorporates “Water Consumption, Energy Use, Solid Waste Management, Overall
Environmental Sustainability of the KFUPM Campus, Transportation Systems because they not
only have a spatial elememts, but these all are also key contributors to GHG emissions” that
must be reduced to ensure the campus’s sustainable development. University sustainability
assessment systems are undergoing rapid transition and transformation to accommodate growing
problems and requirements in the campus sustainability assessment according to the findings.
The model addresses some of the problems of the campus sustainability assessment in
underdeveloped nations by incorporating spatial dimension into overall campus operations
sustainability assessment.
It is proposed that a “GIS-based campus environmental sustainability assessment” will allow for
beneficial visualization of status of the environmental campus’s sustainability and the
examination of various scenarios. The assimilation of the university campus and operating
parameters with a spatial dimension, as well as the conversion of different parameters into
emissions levels, allows for a more systematic and organized assessment of campus
environmental sustainability.
This visual representation will assist in the development of a strategic plan that will yield the
satisfactory performance in terms of emissions reduction from campus operations and
cumulative environmental sustainability. Following technological techniques can also help
government officials to develop strategical planning for enhancing university campuses’
environmental sustainability. While other GIS technical models in the campus sustainability
assessment, like evaluating the compactness of the University campuses, will require more
research in the future. It's also crucial to research to validate the model. Running a mock analysis
and comparing the results to the current situation is one method for model validation.
