1.0 OBJECTIVES AND SAFETY MEASURES

1.1 OBJECTIVES

I. To produce a product based on basic knowledge of workshop process.

II. To produce a tray with specific dimension by using fabrication process.
III. To identify, select and use various marking, measuring, holding, bending,
drilling and cutting tools and equipments for fabrication process.
IV. To understand all the safety precautions when working in the workshop.

1.2 SAFETY MEASURES

i. An extra safety when handling the sharp edge of the sheet at the time on sheet
metal.
ii. In cutting process, students always beware of their hands and surrounding.
Especially cutter need to use at a time when in cutting process.
iii. After used the tools, all the tools must need to put back at their place with
organize and safe.
iv. The area of working place must be cleaned at a time after done handling the
project as to make sure does not have anything that can cause injury. The students
wearing a safety before enter the workshop area.

2.0 INTRODUCTION AND THEORY

This project title fabrication process of multipurpose tray. Fabrication is a fabricated

product where a piece or sheet of metal will went through a few type of processes such as
cutting, bending and assembling. The fabrication of metal usually starts with a precise
dimensions and specifics drawing of the planned product so that it will provides a clear
instruction on how to produce the product. At the end of the processes of fabrication , it will
help develop the skills of designing, cutting, bending and assembling an unuseful metal sheet
into useful tray.

In this fabrication workshop, the students are required to build a multipurpose tray
from a piece of metal sheet. There are several items that are needed to build this product
which will be explained later. First, a piece of metal sheet with a dimension of 370mm X 330
mm is given to the students which is a necessary item to produce the product. metal sheet
such as aluminium and galvanized sheet are widely used in commercial products because of
its properties which are ductile, light, and does not rust easily compared to other metals. A lot
of new tools are introduced to the students to assist them in completing this project such as
scriber, aviation snips, centre punch and so on. This hand tools are very important in marking
and cutting processes.

According to the students,Assignment is one of the crucial part. Thats means there are
a lot of precautions take it safely and neatly to invent the tray. This tray has used to put
stationarys or use to put tool in it.

2
3.0 WORK PROCEDURE & APPARATUS

3.1 WORK PROCEDURE

1. The drawing of the product were reviewed to understand its dimensions, properties and
shaped of the product.

2. After that, the metal sheet were marked using a scriber and a metal ruler. The dimensions
of the project should be the same with the drawing to avoid any error occurs during
assembling the project.

3. Then, the metal sheet was cut according to the marked line using an aviation snips.

3
4. A centre punch is used to makes indentation as the mark for holes on the project.

5. The metal sheet was bended according to the drawing until its shape can be seen likes a
tray. The sides of the metal sheet are clamped to avoid any unwanted accident happened
during workshop is in progress.

6. The bench drilling machine are used to make 6 holes onto the previous marked indentation
makes by the centre punch. A wood block are placed under the intended indentation so
that the holes will be more accurate.

7. The tray are going to be rivet using a pop rivet gun to join the thin pieces of metal through
the holes that were drilled by the drilling machine.

4
8. Before finishing up the project, make sure there are no flaw left on the tray. If there are
some dented places, use the anvil and the hammer to make the dented places disappeared.

3.2 APPARATUS

Aviation snips Scribber

-Used to cut the metal sheet -Used to mark a line on the metal sheet
surface

Steel protector Steel ruler

-Used to measure the angle -Used to measure the dimension of tray

5
Bending machine Metal sheet
-Used to fold the metal sheet -Material used for fabricate steel tray

Pop rivet gun Bench drilling machine

-To join thin pieces of metal. -Use to make a hole onto the project.

4.0 DISCUSSIONS

In this fabrication process of making a tray, there are many different type of processes
which are important in producing a product. A metal sheet was the only raw material. The
processes that were used in this fabrication are measuring, marking, cutting, and bending and
clamping. The metal sheet was first measured with a ruler. The measured area was marked
with a black marker. After determining the marked area, snips were used to cut out all excess
material. The metal sheet was than clamped and bent using a bending machine, each side was
bent at the marking to 90 degrees. During the process of this fabrication, an issue was faced.
The cutting snips were gone blunt, so it made it difficult to cut the sheet metal and to leave a
smooth finish. To solve this problem we need to make sure that regular maintenance is
performed on the tools.

Safety is one of the most important factors when working in any workshop that
requires the Use of sharp tools and machines to avoid. Safety precautions should be taken to
avoid any unwanted accidents that may cause serious bodily harm. A pair of gloves should be
worn when handling any materials with sharp edges as improper handling could cause cuts.
Wear a pair of goggles when using cutting tools and machines to avoid any projectiles
entering the eye.

7
5.0 CONCLUSION

At the end of this project, the objective of the project has achieved and the product
has been successfully finished based on the right technique, process and steps. There are
some problems that occurs during the fabrication process but thankfully we managed to
complete the project.
