Should greater emphasis be placed on Physical Education?

Physical Education (PE) is often viewed as a marginal subject within the curriculum. Many
secondary schools actively reduce PE time to make way for what are deemed more serious
or important subjects. However, given the global increase of health issues such as childhood
obesity and diabetes over the recent years, importance of Physical Education cannot be
undervalued.

The most direct benefit of Physical Education is it helps to maintain students’ health by
building up their strength and fitness. During Physical Education, students are exposed to
different activities, ranging from gentler aerobics or Zumba to more intensive sports such as
rugby. These allow them to train their muscles and also improve their stamina and strength.
In addition to the physical aspect, the theoretical aspect of Physical Education also
contributes to students’ health in that it addresses not only a variety of sports techniques to
ensure that students remain safe as they participate in PE lessons, but also concepts like
balance diet to ensure that students keep themselves fit. As such, due to the health benefits
it brings, more attention should be given to Physical Education.

Physical Education also deserves greater emphasis in the curriculum because it enhances
students’ emotional development to make them more holistic individuals. Bailey, Cope and
Parnell’s research in 2015 notes that physical activities result in “increased levels of self-
esteem”, “reduced depressions and anxiety” and “a greater ability to process stressful
events.” Indeed, exercising reduces stress hormones such as adrenaline and promotes the
release of the hormones endorphin which can create feelings of happiness and euphoria. As
such, Physical Education may relieve the tension that students might have been facing in the
classrooms, thus allowing them to become more relaxed and even confident individuals.

Social interaction between students during PE lessons is another reason to place greater
emphasis on Physical Education. This happens because sports such as basketball and
volleyball are often played in teams, and this means that students are to communicate with
each other to ensure good teamwork which is necessary for victory. An example to highlight
this benefit of Physical Education is a research conducted by Madrona and his colleagues
on how physical education impacts upon students’ social skills. They found that students of
both genders responded positively in that there are improvements in their social skills after
Physical Education lessons, for example, they can better express themselves and integrate
with the school community. This will have a knock-on effect on their academic performance
which may improve as their integration with the school community means that their peers
may be able to assist them in understanding the curriculum. All these benefits of Physical
Education show that it should have a greater place in the curriculum.
Despite these advantages of Physical Education, there have been arguments against
dedicating more time and effort to the subject in school. Opponents argue that students can
engage in sports outside school and that school hours should focus on solely academic
subjects. They see PE lessons as a waste of curriculum time as it is an opportunity for pupils
to take a break from traditional learning and enjoy themselves. These arguments often come
from overzealous parents or educators who believe that school should only be about
traditional learning and exams and, ironically, it is because of these people that greater
emphasis should be placed on Physical Education. These parents or teachers often
pressure students to do well in school, forcing them to forfeit their free time to attend
additional tuition classes or joining study groups as part of their effort to improve their
academic performance. As a result, these students rarely have the time or opportunity to
engage in sports outside school. PE lessons may be the only time for them to fully
participate in activities that could make them physically healthier.

To conclude, Physical Education should be given more attention to keep the students
healthy and stable, both physically and mentally. It is crucial for the students to actively take
part in PE lessons as regular physical activities ensure better performance of the students as
individuals. The benefits of Physical Education are often overlooked, but this needs to
change now to ensure that students are not missing out on a crucial subject in their
development.
