SOLUTION FIVE

(a) Note: Accept any alternative method

5𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 7

3
𝑥 − 7𝑦 = −2
2

Multiply the first equation by 7 and the second equation by four. Adding the two
resulting equations we get

41𝑥 = 41

Therefore, 𝑥 = 1. Substituting this value in the first equation, we get5 + 4𝑦 = 7,

1
hence𝑦 = 2.

Alternatively, the matrix method

The determinant is -41

1 −7 −4
The inverse matrix is - ( 3
5)
41 −
2

x 1 −7 −4 7
( )=− ( )( )
y 41 −3/2 5 −2

x 1 −41
( )=− ( )
y 41 −41/2

(𝑦𝑥 ) = (1/2
1
)

Substitution method

Correct expression of one variable in terms of the other

7 − 4𝑦 7 − 5𝑥
𝑥= 𝑜𝑟 𝑦 =
5 4

Correct substitution in the other expression

3⁄ (7 − 4𝑦) − 7𝑦 = −2 𝑜𝑟 3𝑥 − 7 (7 − 5𝑥 ) = −2
2 5 2 4

Multiply by 10 gives:3(7-4y)-70y =-20 OR Multiply by 4:6x-49+35x=-8

21-12y-70y=-20 OR 41x-49=-8

-82y = -41 OR 41x = 41

Therefore y=1/2 OR x=1

Substitute x or y in the other expression.

The required answer is 𝑛 = 600(0.1251) = 75.06 ≈ 75

3800−2945
(ii) 𝑃(𝑋 < 3800) = 𝑃 (𝑍 < ) = 𝑃(𝑍 > 1.73)
494
= 0.5 − 0.4582 = 0.0418

The required answer is 𝑛 = 600(0.0418) = 25.08 ≈ 25
