Revision D
D00881820 Revision D 2 of 7
1 Purpose
1.1 This document defines the minimum acceptable requirements for thread
root cold rolling on API connections and the vendor qualification process.
Its purpose is to maintain both a uniform and consistent standard for the
suppliers/vendors and a high standard of quality control.
2 Scope
2.1 This specification details the thread root cold rolling requirements for API
connections and the vendor qualification process that must be followed.
3 Reference Documents
3.1 Where industry standards are referenced, the vendor is responsible for
obtaining the documents. Where other Halliburton specifications are
referenced, the vendor is responsible for obtaining the documents from
Halliburton. References are detailed in Table 1.
3.2 If further information is required contact Halliburton Document Control
and they can provide information on where to acquire any of the
documents listed below. If you have any questions and/or are unclear on
anything described/instructed in this specification contact Halliburton
Technology and they will provide any clarification required.

4 Thread Root Cold Rolling Requirements
4.1 Any special requirements referenced on the component drawings
supersede those specified in this document.
4.2 Unless otherwise specified on the drawing, thread root cold rolling shall
be performed on all API threads.
4.3 Cold rolling may be performed using either a manual lathe or a Computer
Numerical Control (CNC) machine equipped with a suitable rolling arm.
4.4 The load may be applied through mechanical or hydraulic means.
4.4.1 Regardless of the method used, the roller arm must be capable of
producing a minimum roller force of 900lbs.
4.5 With the exceptions detailed in this specification, thread rolling shall be
performed in accordance with Section 3.33.7 of DS-1 Fourth Edition,
Volume 3 Addendum 6.
4.6 Parts may be cold rolled using a maximum of 3 passes to obtain the
desired deformation.
4.7 Rollers shall comply with the roller requirements detailed in Section
3.33.7.2 of DS-1 Fourth Edition, Volume 3 Addendum 6.
4.8 Thread roots shall have a minimum deformation as detailed in Table 1.
4.9 Parts shall be rotated at 1 to 10 RPM during the cold rolling process.
4.10 For alloy and carbon steel the required roller force measured in Tables 3.3
and 3.4 of section 3.33.7 (DS-1 Fourth Edition, Volume 3 Addendum 6)
shall be for reference use only.
4.11 For stainless steel and nickel based alloys no reference documents are
available detailing the required force. These forces shall be determined by
the vendor.

5 Supplier Qualification and Annual Audit
5.1 In order to cold roll the roots of threads on Halliburton parts all test
coupons must be prepared and submitted to a Halliburton approved test
facility for evaluation by the secondary process vendor.
5.2 Process qualification testing is required to be repeated and submitted on
an annual basis.
5.3 For qualification to this process, coupons manufactured from alloy steel
and stainless steel shall be evaluated.
5.4 Test coupons shall be prepared as per Section 6 of this document.
5.5 Test coupons shall be evaluated as per Section 7 of this document.
5.6 At Halliburton’s discretion, qualification may also include a review of the
manufacturing equipment and process/procedures intended to be used by
the vendor.
5.7 Any changes to the qualified process shall require approval from
Halliburton Technology, and may require requalification.
5.8 Upon rejection of any coupon evaluation, the vendor must suspend
production of ALL Halliburton components requiring thread root rolling
immediately, pending requalification.
6 Test Coupons
6.1 Prior to submittal, all test specimens must clearly be identified with the
Vendor, Date, Base Material, Process designation and Halliburton
Specification Number/Revision.
6.2 A minimum of two test coupons shall be evaluated.
6.2.1 One coupon shall be manufactured from alloy steel, and one
coupon shall be manufactured from non-magnetic stainless steel.
6.2.2 One coupon shall be an API Regular box thread, and the other
coupon shall be an API Regular pin thread.
6.2.3 Each coupon may have a different size thread.
6.2.4 Coupons shall be machined with a 3” to 8” API Regular thread.
D00881820 Revision D 5 of 7
7.1.2 The minimum thread root deformation shall be determined based
on the lowest deformation achieved across a minimum of twelve
measurement points on the thread connection.
7.2 A micrograph of the coupon cross-section shall be supplied, and the
following evaluated.
7.2.1 The micrograph shall be etched and the deformation in the root of
the thread evaluated.
7.2.2 As shown in Figure 1, a limited amount of deformation is permitted
on the flanks of the thread.
7.2.3 Root and Flank deformation shall meet the requirements detailed
in Table 1.
D00881820 Revision D 6 of 7
8.1.2 Visual inspection to confirm 100% thread root rolling was
performed as per the drawing. Inspection should be done using a
minimum 10x magnifying glass. The root surface will have a
polished appearance if it has been cold rolled.
8.2 Halliburton QA inspection shall verify the items in this specification as per
First Article Inspection (FAI) or Dynamic Modification Rule (DMR).
Additionally for parts requiring FAI or DMR the following shall be
submitted:
8.2.1 Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) Report: Inspection shall be
performed on each API rotary shouldered connection after the
thread root cold rolling process.
