Complex Engineering Activity ENA

1. The document describes designing a bandpass filter and bandstop filter using low pass and high pass RC filters to operate between 1 kHz and 30 kHz. 2. The procedure involves simulating the circuit designs in PSPICE and plotting magnitude vs. frequency graphs to verify the filters allow or suppress frequencies in the desired range. 3. Calculations are shown to determine the capacitor values needed for the low pass and high pass filters based on the given resistor values and desired cutoff frequencies.

Task : Designing a bandpass and bandstop filter using low
pass and high pass filter.
Question :
In this activity, a passive bandpass filter and a bandstop
filter are to be designed and simulated separately. Both the
filters are to be designed using a low pass and high pass RC
filter. The designed filters should operate between 1 kHz
and 30 kHz. Assume that both the resistors of low pass and
high pass filter have values of 10k Ω.
Objective :
1. The designed bandpass filter should allow a range of
frequencies above 1 kHz and below 30 kHz while the bandpass
filter should suppress the same range of frequencies.
2. Simulate the circuits in PSPICE and plot the magnitude vs
frequency graph.
3. Write a report which clearly shows screen shots of the simulated
circuits and the relevant graphs. Also show the calculations
required to get the desired values of capacitors.

Apparatus :
1. AC Voltage source
2. High pass filter
 Resistor
 Capacitor
3. Low Pass Filter
 Resistor
 Capacitor
4. Voltage differential markers
5. Ground
6. Wires

For BandPass Filter :
Procedure :
1) First of all go to draw menu and take new part OR simply press
ctrl+g to pick components.
CEA

2) Then type VAC to pick the voltage AC power supply.

CEA
3) Then type r in the draw menu and pick 2 resistors .
CEA

4) Then type C to get 2 capacitors.

CEA
5) Then type egnd to pick up the ground.
CEA

6) Then connect all the components in series with the help of

draw wire option as shown in the diagram.

7) Then assign values to the components by double clicking on

them and giving values as given in the question.
8) For finding the Value of capacitances we use
C1 = 1 / (2*pi*Fc*R)
C1 = 1 / (2*3.14*1k*10k)
C1 = 1 / (62.8M)
C1 = 0.01592uF
C1 = 15.92nF

For C2 :- C2 = 1 / (2*pi*Fc*R)
C2 = 1 / (2*3.14*30k*10k)
C2 = 1 / (1884M)
C2 = 0.53078nF
C2 = 530.78pF

9) The diagram will be like

10) Now to show the graph first go to setup analysis then click
on Ac Sweep.

11) And then assign values as shown.

CEA
12) Now to Make a bandpass filter fix the voltage differential
markers across the 2nd capacitor as shown.

13) Graph of Band pass filter is.

CEA
14) For finding attenuation graph we click on add trace and then
by its formula as db = 20*log(Vout / Vin) as shown
CEA
15) So the voltage gain graph in terms of dBs is

For Bandstop Filter :

3) Now connect the HPF and LPF in parallel for that

11) We can change the places of capacitor as HPF and LPF are in
parallel and voltage is same in parallel circuits.

12) Now to show the graph first go to setup analysis then click
on Ac Sweep.

13) And then assign values as shown.
