Assignment 3. Metacognitive Reading Report: Descent From Apes)

1. The document provides instructions for a metacognitive reading report on one of three articles about intellectual revolutions: the Copernican revolution, Charles Darwin's paradigm shift, or the creation of psychoanalysis. 2. The report asks students to identify difficult concepts in the article, such as natural selection and human descent from apes. It also asks students to reflect on what they learned, including how their views changed, such as realizing diseases can evolve as defenses against pathogens. 3. Students are prompted to discuss questions like whether evolution can continuously change humans, account for new species, and whether we truly share a common ancestor given genetic differences between organisms.

Assignment 3.

Metacognitive Reading Report

Name:

Instructions: Following the same intellectual revolution assigned to your group during the
earlier presentation, read one of the three articles and accomplish the Metacognitive Reading
Report after.
 Chapters 5-7 of Thomas S. Kuhn's The Copernican Revolution
 Tim M. Berra's Charles Darwin’s Paradigm Shift
 George J. Makari’s Revolution Mind: The Creation of Psychoanalysis
1. Difficult Concepts
a. The Concept of Descents with modification (Natural Selection)
b. All life—including human—is related by descent from a common ancestor (human
descent from apes).
c. Darwinian (or evolutionary) medicine,as formulated by Nesse and Williams (1996) and
expanded by Stearns and Koella (2008) and Gluckman et al. (2009), explaining how
some disease symptoms, such as fever, may be a response favored by natural selection as
a defense against pathogens.
2. Learning Insights
a. Before reading the article, I don’t know what paradigm shift is. I am not very familiar
with it.
However, after reading the article, I now knew of the concept of paradigm shift. From
the article I’ve learned that Philosopher Thomas Kuhn(1962) used paradigm shift to refer
to the replacement of one world view by another. Examples of a paradigm shift in
science include the replacement ofthe earth-centered Ptolemaic system by the sun-
centered Copernican system, and of Newtonian physics by relativity and quantum
physics. I now realized that a paradigm shift is one that can revolutionize
the minds and effort of each person to discover and unfold the truth that lies underneath
and beyond our human capacity of thinking.

b. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that it is insane for us to
think that humans came from or descent from apes or other specie.
However, reading the article/, I now think/learned that when we observe properly
ourselves and other, we can see how Darwin’s theory explained the changes that had
happened. How some part of the body existed before but now it’s not because we don’t
need it anymore. His theory contradicts the religious belief of the creation of man, maybe
his theory is right but I also believed that one was created specially by God, and God is
all knowing and the most powerful that’s why he made us like this, he get rid of the
things we don’t need anymore and evolve us to what we are now.
c. Before reading the article, I thought that this article will all be about the natural selection
and the evolution of man, I thought that this theory will have a less impact/ contribution.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that Darwinian’s theory made a
lot of impact to science, I realized that it is not all about how mankind came about but it
also explained how an organism would react in a certain situation. Like how a body
would be too immune from an antibiotic after taking it over and over again. The body
adapts to the antibiotic which makes it useless. What Charles Darwin discovered had
made future breakthroughs possible, and if not with his theory, Mendelian
Genetics, the Human Genome Project, Genetic Engineering, and so much more will
never be possible.
3. Discussion Questions
a. Is it really possible as what Charles Darwin claimed that we came from a common
ancestor, when we have a different genetic make-up from other living things?
b. Since this revolution explains mankind’s changes, is it continuous? The changes? Will
we change into something more?
c. Can evolution account for new species?
