Profile of Adolescent Physical Development

Sec Ed 350 Fall 2019

Draft Due: 9/20— (if you don’t have this draft at the beginning of class the score on your Final
Draft is reduced 10 pts.)
Final Draft Due: 9/27

Purpose: This assignment has three purposes:

1. Through reading Chapter 1: Biological Transitions, you will gain academic and research based
knowledge about the physical changes of adolescence.
2. Completing the written portion of the assignment links your personal knowledge of adolescent
physical development to the academic knowledge gained in reading the chapter. Through this process
you will link this propositional formal knowledge of adolescent development with the personal
knowledge you have from your experience as an adolescent. This will making your learning about
adolescent development more available as you reflect on, plan for and teach the adolescents you will
teach.
3. Finally, the assignment also serves as a quiz for your reading. Thus, your paper needs to reflect
your knowledge from your reading, experiences you have had connected to the major ideas of the
reading (as specified in the rubric) and the connection of the two.

Assignment: Based on your reading of Chapter 1: Biological Transitions in Steinberg’s

Adolescence, create a three to four page profile that summarizes the details from the text, provides
examples and evidence from your own experience or that of others you know and have observed, and
connects your experience to the formal academic knowledge about adolescent physical development
included in the text. Include detail, experience, and connection between them with each of the
following:
 the role of hormones in adolescent development
o The Endocrine system
o The Triggers of Puberty
o The influence of hormones in Adolescent Development,
 Somatic Development: changes in the stature and dimensions of the body,
 Somatic Development: development of primary and secondary sex characteristics,
 The timing and tempo of development
 Psychological and social impact of puberty (including early and late maturation)
 Physical health and health care (include eating disorders—anorexia, bulimia, and obesity)
Consider your development from its beginning in early adolescence through your current status as a
late adolescent or young adult. This paper will be comprehensive in that it will, for example, follow
your growth spurt from your height and the age or situation when you started up through your
attainment of your full adult height.

Evaluation:
The paper will be evaluated using a rubric. Attend to the rubric as you produce and finalize your
paper since if elements on the rubric are not present in your paper no points can be given.

Include each of the categories listed above. Present a summary of the information from the text,
personal experiences (your own and observations of others), and statements that link the two
demonstrating your synthesis and integration.

As you present examples of your experience feel free to argue your own experience in either support
or opposition to the detail in the book. Make certain that your explanation shows you are familiar
with the discussion in the text and that you have applied it to your development.
