Student Manual for Turnitin

Turnitin is an originality checking and plagiarism prevention service that checks your writing for
citation mistakes or inappropriate copying.

1. Go to Turnitin website on the following link:

https://www.turnitin.com/

2. Create a new user profile using your UMS student email. Click Create Account.

3. You will be taken to this screen. Click Student.

4. Enter the unique Class ID and Class Enrolment Key given by your lecturer.
Key in your first and last name.

5. Register using your UMS email address. Create your password. Keep your password safe.

6. Choose a secret question. Remember the answer. You will be asked this question if you need
to reset your password. Click I Agree to create your profile.

7. Once your profile is created, you can log in to your Turnitin account.

8. On your homepage, you will see your course. Click on the Class name or your course.

9. You will see your class homepage. Read the instructions carefully.

Welcome to your new class homepage! From the class homepage you can see all your
assignments for your class, view additional assignment information, submit your work, and access
feedback for your papers.

Hover on any item in the class homepage for more information.

Class Homepage

This is your class homepage. To submit to an assignment, click on the "Submit" button to the right of
the assignment name. If the Submit button is grayed out, no submissions can be made to the
assignment. If resubmissions are allowed the submit button will read "Resubmit" after you make your
first submission to the assignment. To view the paper you have submitted, click the "View" button.
Once the assignment's post date has passed, you will also be able to view the feedback left on your
paper by clicking the "View" button.

10. Hover on the information symbol to read the detailed instructions given by your lecturer.

11. When you are ready, click the Submit button to submit a new assignment.

12. You will see this screen. Type the title of your submission. Upload your file.
Click on What can I submit? to see the types of files allowed for submission.

13. Once your file is uploaded, click the ‘upload’ button.

14. Your submission details will be shown. Check and confirm your submission. Click the Confirm
button.

15. You will receive a digital receipt to confirm your submission.

16. Larger file will take longer to check. Once the checking is done, your Turnitin report will be
generated. You can see the similarity index on your course homepage. In this example, the
similarity of your report to the text in the Turnitin database is 19%.

17. Your lecturer will receive your Turnit in report. This screen is extracted from your lecturer’s
account.

18. If your similarity index is higher than the required 30%, you may work on your report again,
taking care to cite all sources etc. You may resubmit your report. Click Resubmit.

19. Repeat the document submission process from no. 12.

20. Once your report is generated, you may view the details of your report. Click View.

21. You may download a copy of your report. Click the download icon. Choose Current View or
you may also download your Digital Receipt.

22. Submit the downloaded files if required by your lecturer.

23. Your report can also be downloaded by clicking the download icon on your course
homepage.

24. After 3 resubmissions, you will need to wait 24 hours after a resubmission to see a new
Similarity Report.

25. You may need to do a Turnitin check on your essay for more than one course. Go to the
homepage. Click the Enroll in a Class icon. Insert your given Class ID and Enrolment key for
that course. Click Submit.

26. Your new course is added.

27. Click the Submit button to submit a new assignment.
