Vibration Of A Composite System
1. Title
Vibration Of A Composite System
2. Objectives
1. To Verify The Dunkeley’s Formula In Determining The Fundamental Frequency Of Composite
System
2. To Investigate Undamped Vibration Absorbtion/Transmission
3. Equipments/Apparatus
Universal Vibration Apparatus, precision motor speed unit, tachometer, ruler, weights.
4. Theory
Dunkeley’s formula gives the approximate value of the fundamental frequency of a composite
system in terms of the natural frequencies of its component parts. It is derived by making use of
the fact that the higher natural frequencies of most vibratory systems are large compared to their
fundamental frequencies.
A more convenient presentation of Dunkeley’s Formula For a composite system shown in Figure
1 is given as follow:

Caution: the imperial unit is in use, where g = 32.2 ft/s2, w = 4.53lb, Young’ Modulus = 30 x 106
lb/in2 , Weight of motor and attachment = 6.57 lb, and cantilever weight = 0.75 lb x 2.
It is possible to reduce vibration of the main system by attaching a secondary oscillating system.
In the experiment, vibration absorbability of a small cantilever is investigated. Theoretically, the
distance of the centre of one mass from the centre of the absorber, L is found by the relation:
1 3El g
f Equation 5
2 m L3
Where,
f = applied frequency.
3El g
L3 Equation 6
42 m f 2
5. Methodology
In a group, discuss and determine the necessary steps required to achieve the objective.
