Lab Write-Up Format and Marking Scheme

This document provides a template for a lab report on digital electronics. It outlines 8 sections that should be included: 1) objective, 2) theory, 3) procedure, 4) observation and results, 5) discussion and conclusions, 6) references, 7) grammar and structure, and 8) submission. Typical mistakes are listed for each section to avoid losing marks. The template then provides examples of what should be included in each section, such as stating the objective, explaining relevant theory with citations, listing materials, outlining the step-by-step procedure, presenting results in tables/graphs with calculations, discussing sources of error and answering questions, and concluding by summarizing the findings.

EEB603: Digital Electronics Lab: XX
Aim: The aim/objective of your lab should be stated clearly. Lab report to be typed with all tables,
figures, graphs, circuits drawn using appropriate software/tools.

Introduction
Introduction to be in your own words explaining the theory concerning the lab. Site reference(s) within
your text to indicate the source of information (note that this is mandatory). Include the important and
relevant information about the theory/concept being tested.

Materials
Include the material list indicating the materials used for completing the lab. Example list given below.
 DC Power Supply
 IC’s – 7400, 7402, 7404, 7408, 7432, 7486
 Resistors – 2 x 1kΩ, 220Ω
 1 x LED
 DIP Switch
 Cutter, Long Nose Pliers
 Breadboard & Connecting Wires

Procedure
To be in your own words, written in past tense using passive voice. Include all circuit diagrams
and every single step in carrying out the experiment. (Note: If the lab requires designing then all
design steps has to be included in this section)

Part: A – NAND Gate (7400)

1. The circuit was connected as shown in Figure 1. Note: Pin 14 was connected to Vcc (+5V)
and pin 7 to ground (GND).

Figure 1: Experiment circuit

2. Switches A and B were set to low level (Switch ON gives a Low to the input).
3. The status of LED was recorded. (LED ON = High and LED OFF = Low)
4. All the combinations of the switch states were tested and the status of the LED (output) was
recorded.

Part: B
The procedure in part A was repeated for the rest of the gates and the results were tabulated.

Results:
All results are to be placed here. Theoretical calculation of the values/quantities measured
should also be included (show calculations/workings). Example of a result table is shown.

NAND GATE
INPUT OUTPUT
Switch B Switch A LED Status
Low Low
Low High
High Low
High High

Discussion
1. Discuss the results in this section. Compare your experimental results with the theoretical values. If
possible, show error calculations showing the error between experimental and theoretical values.
Account for any errors that is state the reason(s)/source(s) of errors.
2. Solutions to discussion questions to be placed here (do not forget to number the discussion question
and be precise with your answers).

Conclusion
Summarize your findings in this section. Draw a sensible conclusion supporting it with the
results obtained. Do not repeat your discussion here.

References (Include all references here)
