M9Ge-Ive-1: Round Off Your Answer To The Nearest Foot

This document is a mathematics assessment for grade 9 on trigonometric ratios in real-life problems involving right triangles. It provides two example problems solving for angles and distances using trigonometric functions like tangent, inverse tangent, and the Pythagorean theorem. The assessment then asks students to use these skills to solve two additional problems, one calculating how far up a wall a leaning ladder reaches and how far from the wall its base is, and another finding the distance between a student's school and home after walking blocks in two directions.

Activity Title : Trigonometric Ratios in Real - Life Problems Involving Right Triangles
Learning Targets : Uses trigonometric ratios to solve real life problems involving right triangles

Combining your skills with similar triangles, trigonometry and the Pythagorean Theorem, you are ready
to tackle problems that are connected to more real-world scenarios. The situations you will be examining
will be specifically related to right triangles, and you will be using our three main trigonometric functions.
Once a diagram is established, the mathematical solution will be the same as those shown on solving for
sides or solving for angles.

Examples:

1. A 25-foot-tall flagpole casts a 42-foot 2. A building is 50 feet high. At a distance away

shadow. What is the angle that the sun hits from the building, an observer notices that the
the flagpole? angle of elevation to the top of the building is
410.To the nearest foot ,how far is the observer

tangent ratio.
Solution:
42
Solution: tan x = 50
25 tan 410 =
x
 42 
x = tan −1  
 25  x(tan 410 ) = 50

x  59.20 50
x=
tan 410

x = 58 The observer is 58 feet from the

base of the building .

ACTIVITY : Let’s Work- It-Out

1. A six-meter-long ladder leans against a building . If the ladder makes an angle of 600 with the

ground , a. How far up the wall does the ladder reach ? ( 5 points )

b. How far from the wall is the base of the ladder ? ( 5 points)

2. Yna leaves school to go home. She walks 10 blocks North and 2 blocks East . How far is Yna from

school ? ( 1 block equals 45 feet). 10 points.
