Do Now:: Algebra 2: Lesson 1 - 3 Adding, Subtracting and Multiplying Polynomials Learning Goals

(1) This document provides instructions on adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials. (2) It explains that when adding or subtracting polynomials, like terms are combined by adding or subtracting their coefficients while keeping variables the same. (3) When multiplying polynomials, the distributive property is used to multiply each term of one factor with each term of the other, and exponents of the same variable are added while coefficients are multiplied.

Algebra 2: Lesson 1 – 3 Adding, Subtracting and Multiplying Polynomials

Learning Goals:
1) How do we add and subtract polynomials?
2) How do we multiply polynomials?

Do Now:
Use your knowledge of Algebra I to write each of the following expressions in simplest form:
a) (2𝑥 3 − 6𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 − 2) + (𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 12)

b) (5𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 7) − (𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 5)

c) (𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)(𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐)

To Add/Subtract Polynomials:
• If you are subtracting, you must _________________ the subtraction sign.
• Combine _________ terms.
o To do this, you must ______________ coefficients
o Keep ______________ the same [Do NOT add/subtract them]
• Write your answer with exponents in descending order.

To Multiply Polynomials
• Double distribute
• When multiplying expressions with exponents, _______________ coefficients and _________
exponents.
• Combine like terms using rules for adding/subtracting polynomials
Multiplication of Polynomials in a Tabular Format (Area Arrays)
Example:
Use tabular method to multiply (𝒙 + 𝟖)(𝒙 + 𝟕) and combine like terms.
𝒙 + 𝟖

𝒙𝟐 𝟖𝒙 𝒙

+ (𝒙 + 𝟖)(𝒙 + 𝟕) = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟏𝟓 𝒙 + 𝟓𝟔
𝒙𝟐
𝟕𝒙 𝟓𝟔 𝟕

𝟏𝟓𝒙 𝟓𝟔

a) Use any method to multiply (𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 2) and combine like terms.

Practice:
Express each of the following in simplest form.
3 1 3
1) Subtract 4 − 𝑥 − 4 𝑥 3 from 2 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 5 𝑥 − 1
Hint:
Which
expression goes
first?
Combine like
terms. Only
add/subtract
coefficients and
leave exponents
the same.

1 3 2
2) (2 x + 5) (x 2 + 2 x + 5)
Hint:
Double
distribute (use
the table method
if you want).
Multiply the
coefficients and
add the
exponents.

3) (2x + 5)3
Hint:
Think about how you
would do 23 without
using a calculator. Do
the same process here!
[You cannot distribute
the exponent across the
+ sign]
4) If 𝐴 = 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 1 and 𝐵 = 2𝑥 − 1 then express 𝐴𝐵 − (𝐴 + 𝐵) as a polynomial in standard
form.

Hint:
Plug values into
the expression
given.
Think about
order of
operations!
What needs to
be done first?

Extend your thinking….

How would you approach this problem knowing what we did in class today?
5) Algebraically determine the values of h and k to correctly complete the identity stated below.
2𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 + 11𝑥 − 7 = (𝑥 − 4)(2𝑥 2 + ℎ𝑥 + 3) + 𝑘
