Lesson Plan

This lesson plan targets 1st grade elementary school students and focuses on teaching addition and subtraction strategies and operations. The lesson will take 45 minutes to 1 hour and includes an introduction to gauge student knowledge, modeling and practicing examples with students, group work to create addition and subtraction problems, checking for understanding by solving example problems, and an exit ticket assessment. The goal is for students to be able to independently create and solve addition and subtraction problems using strategies learned.

Lesson Title: Subtraction and Addition Target Time

Grade Level: Elementary School 1st Grade

TEK(S): 4A) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop and
use strategies and methods for whole number computations in order to solve addition and subtraction
problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected to recall basic facts to add and subtract
within 20 with automaticity.
Content Objective: The student will be able to apply mathematic number operations in order to create
addition and subtraction problems on their own.
Target: “I can create/solve addition and subtraction problems using strategies for addition and
subtraction”
Materials: Early finishers/ Equation sheet, markers, big note pad/paper, dry erase boards,

Time period: 45 Minutes - 1 hour (60 Minutes)

Introduction/Anticipatory: Does anybody know what subtraction and addition is used for or anything
about it?
I will have a big note pad stationary area and write down student’s responses to see if they how much
they know about addition and subtraction. This activity will help students show their knowledge of the
subject as well as see others responses to get the gist of what subtraction and addition is.

Instructional Input/ Modeling: I will demonstrate and solve equations with students on a white dry
erase board. I will guide them through it while using strategies such as drawing the amount of quantity and
more. They will follow through with me for at least 5 examples and then two of them will be individual,
so that they can try using the strategies themselves.

Guided Practice: Students will work in their table groups with an early finishers sheet. They will have
markers to write on the dry-erase finishers sheet to interact with it and put the equations they have
made up with their target number onto the equation sheet. They will have a time limit. Then at the end
the group’s sheets will all be picked up, as well as a discussion on how the students were able to form
addition and subtraction equations.

Checking for Understanding: Place a story equation document consisting of subtraction and addition
problems on the dry-erase board and call for students to read and solve with any method or strategy
learned before. They will tell the teacher what method or strategy they used.

Closure: What did we/you learn? What strategies can we use for subtraction? What strategies can we
use for addition?
The teacher will ask these questions to the students as well as review and clear any misunderstandings
with the students.

Assessment: All students will receive an exit ticket with ten equations consisting of five addition and
subtraction problems. Then they will proceed to solve all with the knowledge they have gained today.
