POWER SYSTEM DESIGN AND OPERATION (SKEE 4683)

DESIGN PROJECT: DG Placement and Sizing for Loss Minimization

Date: 11 February 2018

The presence of distributed generation (DG) in the power system may lead to several advantages such as
voltage support, improved power quality, loss reduction, deferment of new or upgraded transmission and
distribution infrastructure and improved utility system reliability. However, the insertion of DG into the
power system could either have a positive or negative impact depending on the operating characteristics
of the DG and the power network. The appropriate placement of DGs is also important so as to ensure
that system power loss can be reduced. This design project deals with finding appropriate placement and
size of GDs for a given system using a power system simulation software. Following system data and DG
data are provided. Assume the system is balance and power flow analysis is sufficient for the study. System
MVA and KV bases are 10 MVA and 11 kV respectively.

Task

a) Find the most appropriate placement and sizing of the DG for the given system considering the objective
given below
b) Objective is to minimize system power loss as much as possible without violating voltage limits of the
system. Voltage at any system bus should be between ±5 p.u.
c) Solution approach is left to the designer. But the approach must be a systematic approach. (For example
exhaustive search, optimization methods, sensitivity analysis)
d) Simulation must be done using Power World simulator software.

Note:

• A comprehensive report (soft and hard copy) is required to evaluate your design steps. The report should include 1)
Introduction, 2) Methods and Tools used 3) Case studies and findings 4) Conclusion.
• Form a group with 3 members and work together to complete the project.
• Some related works like article “Optimal Sizing and Placement of Distributed Generation in Distribution System

• Demo version of simulator can be down loaded from the following link: http://www.powerworld.com/download-
purchase/demo-software

• Try including the DG in each bus, increase according to the given table one by one, observe, and record the power.
One of them will give the lowest power loss. Assume power factor of each DG is 0.95 leading.
