TOOLS FOR COLLABORATIVE WORK

Collaborative Tools ;

The purpose of the collaboration tool is to support a group of two or more individuals to
accomplish a common goal or objective. Easily accessible and user- friendly collaboration
tools allow students to explore, share, engage, and connect with people and content in
meaningful ways that help them learn.

Nowadays the growth of technology influences the changes in group collaboration's process
either for the professional or for the students. Especially, in these pandemic days we need this
technology more than ever. The requirement of interaction in group collaboration while being
in distance education forces the teacher and the students to schedule their meeting in order to
teach and study the tasks given. So, the technology starts to influence the process of group
collaboration as a communication and interaction media between students in doing their
tasks(Achmad Nizar Hidayanto 2014). In this paper work, we are going to analyze the factors
from collaboration tool characteristics that rise the interaction to upper level in distance
education, the advantages \ disadvantages of using collaborative tools in group collaboration
to the group performance, and how teachers and students might use these tools effectively.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE TOOLS

Collaborative learning is an activity that involved a process where a group of students

collaborate to accomplish problem solving task given as learning activities requirement
(Alavi, Wheeler, & Valacich, 1995). Working together, at certain period, and aiming the
same goal to achieve are the main characteristics of a collaboration. In addition, using
collaborative tools is a way that collaboration activities in group can be done without physical
meetings. Collaborative tools are usually web-based, it can be accessed by user easily.
Generally, group collaboration activities are supported by web-based applications with no
requirement to pay at high price, the users just need the internet access, there is no
requirement to have other additional hardware. Of course, you may access more options for
web-based applications by paying specific fee for it. Some examples of collaborative tools
are e-mail, audio conferencing, collaborative presentation software, conference room video-
conferencing, desktop video conferencing, discussion database, document management
software, electronic whiteboarding, group authoring, GDSS, group scheduling and
calendaring, knowledge management systems, one-way bulletin boards (BBS), personal
communication tools like laptop, mobile phone, pagers, and so on (Becker & Cline, 2005).
