2nd Task The Importance of Punctuation in Writing
In writing, there are a lot of the rules of writing which have been set. The rule
contains the charge rules the way of writing. Writing activities have rules written
to be aware of in order to improve the quality of writing, such small things such as
the use of capital letters, letters sideways, until the use of punctuation. There is
no special science that studies about punctuation in detail. This is a result that
caused punctuation more often neglected. Whether in a grammar class, a
general English class, a writing course, or a reading course? Honestly, I am a
little confused about this, but did we learn about the use of punctuation that can
from anywhere? Of course, we can because when studying grammar, we
definitely will find grammar, writing of the use of punctuation, neither with the
reading, and those who teach it.
The first function of punctuation mark is the use of punctuation aims to show the
expression of meaning and information correctly and appropriately. Truss in
Hirvela said that incorrect placement of coma will cause errors in the meaning of
sentences, as well as with other punctuation. Function of punctuation is to clarify
the content of the writings, as well as to avoid ambiguity automatically.
According to Araman and Wiggi, 1997 in Hirvela noted that the placement of
punctuation marks such as commas affect the reader in understanding the
content of the readings. Therefore, the placement of the correct punctuation is
very important because it will affect the meaning of a reading. For example:
“Jane, I say unto thee, this day thou shalt be with me in this room.”
“Jane I say unto thee this day, thou shalt be with me in this room”
The changed position of the comma that appears just after “thee” in the first
version to after “this day” in provides two very different perspectives on when the
joining in this room will take place, and all because of a punctuation mark.
Third, as well as punctuation also serves to give pause or stop signs, giving
emphasis and intonation (Fowler and Fowler, 1931; pp. 233e234). Punctuation
can indicate the type of sentence in the news of the sentence if it is marked with
a full stop (.), question sentences that are marked with a question mark (?), the
sentence commands (!), as well as give pause to read, or underline that indicates
that these important words or sentences. Proper punctuation would affect the
intonation when reading. Usually the sentence ending with an exclamation point
(!) will be read with a rather high intonation (ascending). Punctuation will also give
emphasis on certain things or that nature is important, so that the reader can
understand the content of writing well. For example:
