CN Tutorial PYQ

This document provides instructions for a coursework test on computer networks. It outlines that students must answer all questions in handwritten form on paper and submit scanned PDF files of their work through a Google Classroom link. It also includes a declaration stating that submitted work must be the student's own and free of plagiarism. The test contains 5 questions assessing students' knowledge of network benefits, peer-to-peer vs client-server models, the OSI model, cable types for different network scenarios, and concepts like analog/digital signals, data modulation, and transmission flaws.

Question 1

Provide and describe THREE (3) benefits of installing a network in a school environment.
(6 marks)
- Resource sharing
o Most schools cannot afford enough laser printers, fax machines, modems and etc.
for each of the computers. However, if these or similar peripherals are added to a
network, they can be shared by many users together.
- Flexibility/speed
o Network can allow the sharing to be handled easily and provide a very rapid
method for sharing and transferring files.
- Security
o User Access Control can be set and monitored in order to enhance network
security.
- Cloud computing
o For example, Google Drive, online documents and digitalized print media are
rising and users from different campuses can access the same material online
easily. (ICloud, AWS, OneDrive, DropBox)

Question 2

(a) There are two models in which a network can be installed. Peer to peer and client server. Give
and elaborate the FIVE (5) differences between a peer to peer network and a client server
network.
(10 marks)

than 10 computers.
Each of the peers has its own data. The data is stored in a centralized server.
(Decentralized)
All computers have equal ability. Server has the control ability while the clients do
not.

(a) Fill in the diagram concerning the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model.

Layer Name Function PDU

7 Data Contains protocols used for process-to-process Data
communication.
6 Presentation Provides for common representation of the data
transferred between application layer services.
5 Session Provides service to the presentation layer to organize its
dialogue and to manage data exchange.
4 Transport Defines services to segment, transfer and reassemble the Segments
data for individual communication between the end
devices.
3 Network Provides services to exchange the individual pieces of Packets
data for individual communications between the end
devices.
2 Data Link Describe methods for exchanging data frames between Frames
devices over a common media.
1 Physical Defines the electrical, mechanical, procedural and Bits
functional means to activate, maintain and deactivate the
physical connections for bit transmission to and from a
network drive.

Question 4
(a) Propose the types of cable to be used to install networks in the following scenario. Explain
the reasons for your choice.

Access to the network is required in an underground laboratory. You are required to cable up
4 PCs that is in this lab to a server room which is located outside the premise. This
underground laboratory employs the use of equipment that generate a large amount of
electromagnetic waves. Data that is uploaded from the PCs consists of large gigabits of
information that has to be delivered accurately to the server. It would require a fast speed of
upload in the shortest time possible.

(3 marks)
- Fiber Optic Cable
o Immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI)
o Fast speed
o Can carry signals for a far distance without the usage of repeaters/with less signal
attenuation. It can be operated at much greater distances.

(b) A network technician has connected some devices together to form the a network. He
connect a PC using Ethernet LAN cable from its Ethernet Port on the Network Interface
Card to a switch. The switch then connects to a router, also using an Ethernet Port. This router
is a wireless router which will then allow connection to other devices through wifi connection.

List down 3 devices/connection/parts and the standards/standard organization that govern the
connection. One example has been filled in for you

Part Name Standard Organisation

1 Ethernet Port IEEE, RJ45 connector
2 Network Interface Card ANSI
3 Ethernet Cable TIA/EIA
4 WIFI IEEE

(6 marks)

Question 5

(a) Briefly explain the following

i. Analog signal
Signal with continuous values, which is denoted as a sine wave form which has amplitude
and a time interval (frequency).
ii. Digital Signal
Discrete or not continuous signal. A digital signal carries the data in the form of binary
(0,1) because it signifies in the bits.
iii. Data Modulation

Conversion of signal from analog to digital and vice versa.

iv. Full Duplex transmission
Signals flow in both directions simultaneously.
(4 marks)
(b) List and describe THREE (3) transmission flaws.
(3 marks)
Noise – Any undesirable influence (interference) that degrade or distort the transmission of
signals.
Latency – Delay between transmission and receipt of signals.
Attenuation – Signal degradation after travelling a certain distance.
