1. (a) “One of the major functions of the family is procreation.”


Define the term ‘procreation’. (2 marks)

(b) Identify TWO other functions of the family. (2 marks)

(c) Describe TWO ways in which parents can prepare children for financial responsibilities.

(d) (i) “Self-reliance is important to combating poverty”. Suggest, giving full details,
THREE measures that may be used by poor families to become more self-
reliant. (6 marks)

(ii) Explain fully why EACH measure you identified will be successful. (6 marks)

2. “Some students attending a number of secondary schools are forming themselves into gangs.”

(a) Outline TWO ways in which the structure of a school gang differs from that of a boy scout
troop. (2 marks)

(b) State TWO factors that may encourage students to become members of a school gang.
(2 marks)

(c) Give TWO reasons why conflict often arises between the members of a school gang and
other members of the school community. (4 marks)

(d) The Police have suggested that members of school gangs should be prosecuted in the
Courts for illegal gang-related activities.

(i) Suggest to a School Board, giving full details, THREE other measures which may
be used for dealing with gang activities in the school. (6 marks)

(ii) Explain fully why EACH of the measures will be successful. (6 marks)

3. (a) What is meant by the term ‘floating voter’? (2 marks)

(b) State TWO types of information that can be found on a voters’ list. (2 marks)

(c) A public opinion poll in the country of Levale predicted the results shown in the table
below, for an upcoming general election. Study the information, then answer questions
(i) – (iv) which follow.

TRADE LIBERALIZATION: DIFFICULTIES FOR CARIBBEAN COUNTRIES

Write an essay on the topic above. Begin your essay by stating the meaning of the terms ‘trade
liberalization’ and ‘trade bloc’. Give TWO reasons why Caribbean countries face difficulties when
trading with countries outside of the region. Finally, suggest to the members of a Manufacturers’
Association, giving full details, THREE actions they may take to help improve Caribbean trade.

modes of communication. Describe TWO ways in which modern communication technology has
improved business operations across the Caribbean. Finally, suggest, giving full details, THREE
measures that the government of your country may take to increase the use of communication
technology in your country. Explain fully why EACH of the measures you have suggested will
be successful.

As a member of the Prices Watch Consumer Association you have been invited to deliver a speech

ship operators may take to improve the quality of the physical environment in the Caribbean.
