Lightning
Lightning is a natural electrical discharge, which lasts for
30 microseconds. This event takes place during storms. It
always seems to occur striking from the cloud to the
ground, but it can also strike inside the cloud. The
lightning generates an electromagnetic radiation that can
appear as hot plasma or visible light. It also produces a
loud sound called the thunder.
When cold and warm air meet, the warm air flies up and
creates storm clouds. The warm air creates water droplets
that meet with the ice produced by the cold air. This way,
electrical charges in a cloud occur. Next, there is a positive charge at the top of the cloud and a
negative at the bottom. The one at the bottom has to get strong enough to let energy out and
the negative charge together with the positive charge create a lightning bolt.
Lightning bolts are often attracted by tall and massive buildings. If a building struck by lightning
does not have an appropriate protection system, the ground and objects nearby might get
destroyed or receive severe damage.
Light pillar
Light pillar is a light phenomenon, created by the reflection of light. It can be seen as a narrow beam
of light. It mostly occurs due to the sun rays, but the light can also come from the moon or the
anthropogenic sources such as lamps or lanterns.
When a light pillar occurs, it’s because light is refracted in ice crystals. They are most likely to happen
when street lights give light in the night and when there is no wind, so that the ice crystals could
form.
A light pillar can form above or below (or both above and below at once) the light source. It’s an optical
illusion that can be created by every object that produces light.
