Running Head: ASSESSMENT 2 CAFS 1

LEADERSHIP- SCENARIO 1
Leaders are prepared with the skills and knowledge needed to lead people to action. They

facilitate interactions between party members. Use the media to make any change for the

better. Have an ability to recognise and fix critical topics. As well as share opinions and ideas
(Barnes, 2021).

Leadership is a method that encourages a community of people to collaborate towards a

common cause (Ward, 2021). In a school setting, these may include senior staff and students

with a plan to address the requirements of school activities. Leaders can range from business

managers, school principles, or team coaches.

Important elements such as integrity, trust, bravery, commitment, enthusiasm and inspiration

are all characteristics that leaders should embody to be successful.

However, the particular style of leadership guides one’s role as a successful leader. Having an

understanding in choosing the right leadership style is vital in being a successful leader. The

most appropriate leadership style for a given situation is determined by many factors.

For instance, in the sporting world, it is essential for the leader to be able to build teamwork

among athletes, organisations, and clients. Sport managers should be able to encourage

people to work together to accomplish mutual goals and to succeed as a team as well as lead

appropriately under given situations.

In scenario 1’s case, the female sports organiser has taken on the responsibility of organising

an athletics carnival. As she is the leader, issues regarding the weather, attendance, discipline,

carnival safety, and zone team selections are of her concern. Therefore the leader must

choose the most appropriate leadership style for her given situation so events occur smoothly

and efficiently.

A leadership style refers to the characteristic actions of leaders as they perform, inspire, direct

and handle groups of individuals (Cherry, 2021). Leaders can be either task-oriented; based on

procedures that are suitable for a task, or people-oriented; whereby they are centred on the

experiences and inter-relationships of individuals taking part in a task. Nevertheless, both

forms should be demonstrated by the leader for the duration of the task. Different styles of

leadership have characteristics that make them distinctly different. Styles of leadership

include, Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez faire, and transformational (Beattie et al., 57-58).

AUTOCRATIC- The autocratic style of leadership renders all decisions and is driven to

accomplish the task as easily and efficiently as possible. This style of leadership is

'authoritarian' and does not take into account the group's views or desires. The autocratic

leader doesn’t assign accountability or insist on collective success and group accomplishment

(Sampla, 2021). As efficient as this style of leadership can be, it tends to have negative impacts

on group wellbeing such as reducing individual creativity and having little regard for

members’ skills and ideas, leading to low job satisfaction and decreased self esteem.

DEMOCRATIC- Democratic leadership seeks to share decisions with the party and is

therefore prepared to assign responsibility. This style of leadership believes in consultation

and is active in building positive collaborative partnerships within the team. The belief is that

by allowing each member the 'ownership' of the mission, the community can work together to

establish harmony and a shared goal (Sampla, 2021).

LAISSEZ FAIRE- In the laissez-faire style, the leader will stand back and allow the party to

take its own independent decisions. This style can happen naturally depending on the leader

and may present challenges in direction throughout the group if the leader is inefficient

(Sampla, 2021). Similar to autocratic, Laissez Faire leadership has less pros than cons as it is

not as directive and task-oriented as a leadership style should be. With the amount of freedom

and minimal input, workers eventually will feel unmotivated and have lack of group cohesion

which causes a chaotic workplace environment and low productivity, affecting the groups

wellbeing through an adverse way.

TRANSFORMATIONAL- Transformational leaders seem socially clever, optimistic and

passionate. They are committed not only to helping the group reach its goals, but also to

making the people of the society realise their potential (Cherry, 2021).

In this case, the democratic leadership style appears to be the most fitting and appropriate to

the situation, since planning an athletics carnival requires a lot of teamwork and

communication in order to run accordingly. Characteristics of democratic leadership such as

changing positions according to the progress of the event, which, in such situations, would be

very beneficial if the staff member complains about their involvement in the athletics

carnival; by shifting roles during the day, staff members will be active and involved

throughout the day, influencing the group well-being in a positive way.

On the other hand, Autocratic and Laissez faire are not as appropriate and suitable for the

particular scenario since organising an athletics carnival is highly based around teamwork

and organisation. Autocratic is too intolerant and demanding whereas Laissez faire is too

lenient and non-directive, both unfitting for the role of leading an athletics carnival. If

autocratic were to be the chosen leadership style, the athletics carnival wouldn’t run smoothly

as group members would feel unsatisfied and overworked due to the lack of empowerment

and consideration. Nevertheless, if it were to be the Laissez faire leadership style, the

athletics carnival would be out of control as there would be no discipline and role of conduct,

lacking carnival safety and efficiency.

The power base defines the basis of power. It influences the dynamics of the group, so that

the leader is free to hold influence in compliance with their own strengths and abilities (Beattie

et al., 55). The five main power bases are Legitimate, reward, coercive, referent, and expert
(Beattie et al., 55).

LEGITIMATE- Legitimate power stems from an organization's position of power as a boss

or as a prominent member of its management team. The power comes from employees'

recognition of the individual's authority. For example, the CEO who determines the overall

direction and resource requirements of the company (Abudi, 2021).

REWARD- Reward influence is transmitted by rewarding individuals for the achievement of

their goals. This can be accomplished by providing promotions, discounts, rewards and extra

working days. For instance, the boss who gives the workers the time to deal with the task

when they fulfil the goal (Abudi, 2021).

REFERENT- Referent power refers to gaining respect and reliance by others who trust in the

way situations are handled. Example being, a human resource associate is required to ensure

that workers are handled equally and come to the defense of those who are not (Abudi, 2021).

COERCIVE- Coercive power applies to the concern of risking jobs, being dismantled,

obtaining a poor performance review or taking away prime projects. The ability to threaten

people obtains this power base. In this case, the sports organiser can use this power when

students are misbehaving and spoiling the fun for everyone else. At that point, the power may

be used.

EXPERT- Expert power-base derives from personal experiences, talents or expertise. When

accumulating expertise in unique fields and becoming market experts in those areas, one

naturally starts collecting professional influence to help others accomplish our objectives

(Abudi, 2021). For scenario 1, expert power bases are also suitable and appropriate for the

given situation as the leader seems to be very familiar with the procedures of organising a

sporting event, and may inspire or educate others based on her past experience and personal

expertise.

Overall, based on scenario 1’s given situation; Democratic leadership style is the most

suitable and appropriate style to take on the number of factors that affect organising a

sporting event such as an athletics carnival. Power-bases are vital for a leader as they

distinctly play vital roles in different sorts of situations and for this scenario, expert and

coercive fit that role precisely.
