interesting information the reader learns from this story. (5 points)
The author used a lot of similes to describe the way she and her son felt when they
discovered the library. The similes the author used are unbelievable and surprising.
The author also illustrated some great pictures for readers to get a better
understanding of what the main character was feeling, what she saw, and how others
saw her. For example, when the author said, “There were so many things we didn’t
know.” And when she said, “We made lots of mistakes.” They were followed by
illustrations of a map and her and her son in a fountain with a police officer watching
them. Those illustrations showed what kinds of things they didn’t know and what
mistakes were made.

How can the reader relate to the character?
Who are the supporting characters?
The main character of the story is Yuyi and her son who is one of the supporting
characters. The reader knows this because the character is never really introduced
but the entire story is in first person. Also, at the end of the book the author provides
a more in-depth story of how her and her son migrated to the United States. Readers
can relate to the character by remembering times they were confused of their
surroundings or were not able to understand the language around them. Especially
those children who are also dreamers can relate quite a bit to the main character.

Plot: Summarize the major events of the story (6 points)


The first major event to happen in this story is Yuyi and her son migrating to the U.S.
Her and her son experienced a major change and lots of judgment from Americans.
They would tell them to speak English or be rude because they couldn’t understand
them. The other major event that happened was when they discovered the library.
This was their turning point in the story when they become more comfortable with
their surroundings. This was also when they learned to read, write, and speak English.

The setting of this book takes place in the United states at a library. The theme of this
book is, It’s to step out your comfort zone in order to chase your dreams.

The style of this book is expressionism. This is a story about a mother and her son
coming to the United States and their struggles when they arrived. The illustrations
emphasize their emotions to allow the reader to have a better understanding and
connection to the art and story.

The media for the illustrations looks like they are acrylic paint and maybe a thread
like material. The flowers look like they could be made from embroidery thread.

Line: There are lines all over the illustrations. They are used to outline the flowers
and to create more details in the flowers.
Shapes: This book has a lot of shapes like stars, hearts, circles, rectangles, and
squares. The stars represent stars in the sky, the circle is the moon, the rectangles are
buildings and the squares are books.

The illustrations in this book take up the entire page. There is no boarders because
the page is taken up by the illustrations. Each page has a different illustration and the
word placement is different on each page.

At this stage children begin the understand the world around them through language
and mental images. This book had a lot of vocab that described the way they felt
when they immigrated to the United States and when they discovered the library. This
book also has a lot of great illustrations that emphasized the emotions the characters
were feeling to allow the reader to better understand.

Why?
I really liked the illustrations in the book, and I thought the story line was good. The
only reason I didn’t give it a 5/5 was because I felt that the book could have added
more Mexican culture to it, and it could have possibly explained the struggles a little
more. It was a little vague but overall I really liked it.
