Dynamix 1444 Series

Application Note

API-670, Machinery Protection

Systems, Compliance & Exceptions
Patrick Carle

February 2016

The Allen-Bradley Dynamix™ 1444 Series system documentation makes the following
statement regards compliance with the API standard…

API-670 Compliance
The 1444 series is designed in accordance with the relevant
sections of the 5th Edition of the American Petroleum
Institutes (API) standard 670(1) ‘Machinery Protection
Systems’.
1) Whether a system is compliant is dependent on the components that are
provided, the various optional elements of the standard that you require,
and the configuration of the installed system.

This note states which sections of the standard are “relevant”, and which are not.
NOTES:
 Where API-670 is quoted the text will be presented in a common format as follows:
“Example API-670 text.”
 While some aspects of the Standard must be satisfied by the hardware solution
specifically, many (most) are satisfied by specifying, installing and configuring the
system in accordance with the standard.

API-670 Scope
Standard 670 of the American Petroleum Institute specifies the minimum requirements for a
machinery protection system. The 5th Edition of the standard, published November 2014,
states as its scope…
2 | API-670 Compliance & Exceptions

This standard covers the minimum requirements for a machinery protection system (MPS) measuring radial shaft vibration,
casing vibration, shaft axial position, shaft rotational speed, piston rod drop, phase reference, overspeed, surge detection,
and critical machinery temperatures (such as bearing metal and motor windings). It covers requirements for hardware
(transducer and monitor systems), installation, documentation, and testing.

The Dynamix 1444 Series is a monitor. And while the monitor is the core element of any
protection system, it is not the only component of the MPS. In addition the 1444 Series
does not provide functionality necessary to serve all of the monitor applications specified by
the standard.
In terms of scope Dynamix addresses some or all of the elements as indicated in the
following:
”This standard covers …measuring radial shaft vibration, casing vibration, shaft axial position, shaft rotational speed,
piston rod drop, phase reference, overspeed, surge detection, and critical machinery temperatures…”
Conversely the 1444 Series does not provide capabilities associated with monitoring
overspeed, surge detection and temperature.

Responsibilities
Section 7.1.1 of the Standard states the following:

The manufacturer of the monitoring system shall provide documentation affirming the system’s compliance with and/or
exceptions to all aspects of this standard except those that are configuration- and/or installation-related.
The entity(ies) responsible for installation and configuration of the system shall provide documentation affirming the system’s
compliance with and/or exceptions to all aspects of this standard that are configuration- and/or installation-related.
NOTE Certain aspects of the system are hardware dependent, such as performance and most aspects of reliability. In these cases, the manufacturer of the
system is expected to verify the system satisfies the requirements of the standard. However, many aspects of the standard are installation dependent, such as
number and placement of sensors and the configurable capabilities of a system (e.g. alarm and relay configuration).

This document satisfies the requirement stated in the 1st sentence of the above. Satisfying
the second sentence is the responsibility of the entity that specified and installed the
system.

Exceptions
This section lists the exceptions to the standard. See the following for further detail regards
exceptions to the specific sections of the standard.
a. Power to Dynamix 1444 Series modules is not 90…132 VAC, required per section

c. The Dynamix 1444 Series does not include an integral display, required per sections
7.1.6 through 7.1.9. Also see section 7.1.10.
3 | API-670 Compliance & Exceptions

d. The Dynamix 1444 Series does not include a temperature monitoring capability,
required per section 7.4.5.
e. The Dynamix 1444 Series does not include on Electronic Overspeed Detection
capability, required per section 8 and annex J.
f. The Dynamix 1444 Series does not include a Surge Detection capability, required per
section 9.
g. The Dynamix 1444 Series does not include, nor can it act as, an Emergency Shutdown
System (ESD), required per section 10.

Requirements
This section presents the listed exceptions in the context of the standard.
The 5th Edition of API-670 is comprised of introductory statements, 12 Sections, 17 Annex’s
(appendixes), and concluding figures, table and other information. The 12 sections are the
“normative” part of the standard, where the requirements are stated. Of the 17 annex’s, 5
are “normative”, so include stated requirements, and 12 are “informative” only, so are not
considered requirements of the standard.
Following are comments associated with each normative section and annex of the
standard.

1 Scope
No comments or exceptions.

2 Normative References
No comments or exceptions.

3 Terms, Definitions, Acronyms and Abbreviations

No comments or exceptions.

4 General Design Specifications

4.10.1 All machinery protection monitor systems shall be capable of meeting the accuracy requirements specified in Table 1 with input
voltage to the power supply of 90 Vac rms to 132 Vac rms or 180 Vac rms to 264 Vac rms, switch selectable, with a line frequency of
48 Hz to 62 Hz.
Exception (dependent on 4.10.2): Dynamix 1444 Series modules require: 18…32V DC, max 5 A
SELV/class 2 source.

5 Sensors and Transducers

No exceptions.
This document assumes that sensors and transducers used are compliant to the standard.

6 Sensor and Transducer Arrangements

No exceptions.
4 | API-670 Compliance & Exceptions
