TIMBER ENGINEERING

Name: Nisha Prakash

1. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Design specification includes a layout and a plan of a office
building as specified by our client Dr. Rijun Shreshtha.
Assumptions for the design are made considering the
specified drawings.

2. FRAMING SYSTEM OF THE STRUCTURE

Considering Screw connection for the design of Apex, Knee
and Foundation since it is the moment resistance frame and
easy to install. Further it is assumed that the column and
foundations joints are fixed.

3. BRACING
It is known that the Lateral loads produced by the wind is
counteracted by the bracings and these bracings shall be
installed in the periphery of the building experiencing the
wind load.

4. SELECTION OF THE MATERIAL

Nelson Pine LVL is an engineered wood obtained from the
peeled veneers which are surfaced in the Parallel grain
orientation. This type of Pine is mainly used to disperse or
remove the strength reducing characteristics of the wood.
Nelson Pine LVL is dimensionally stable, resists warping and
twisting and is machined to consistently uniform sizes. The
following are the properties of the same,

TIMBER PROPERTIES
Type LVL11
Thickness 2.5 – 4.4 mm
Moisture Content 8 – 15%
Joint Group JD3&JD4
Timber Modulus E 11000
Modulus of rigidity 550
Timber Tensile Strength 26
Timber Compressive Strength 38
Timber Shear Strength 5.3
Timber Bending Strength 38

5. DESIGN CODES AND GUIDELINES

In the design of the proposed office building the following

code book guidelines are considered and designed according
to the regional standards.

6. LOAD ACTION

The Live load on the slab is considered to be 3KPa and

Partition wall load of 0.11 KN/m2 (from table A2,
AS1170.1). The other load calculations are directly
considered from the analysis software – Microstran.

7. WIND LOADS
The designed office building falls in the importance of level 3
of table 3.2 from AS 1170.0. The design life of this building
is considered to be 50 years and hence 1000 years of return
period is considered for the determination of regional wind.

8. ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE

The structure is drawn and analyzed by using Microstan. The

framing is done by using Microstran and the dimension are
designed to the safety of loads. The load combinations were
initially taken from AS 1170.0:2002 and these loads are
further input into the program.

The structure is analyzed and further the validity of the model

is checked by hand calculations. The output of the analysis is
further analysed and recalculated, further this is involved in
the design of structural elements.

9. RESULTS FROM THE ANALYSIS

Once the analysis is run through the program for the analysis,
the highest value i.e the highest load for the structural
member is taken and used in the design of elements in the
structure.

10. SUMMARY OF THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN

1) Preliminary dimensions for the office building are

considered and designed before arriving at the final
dimensions and are depicted in the following table.
