Introduction
This operating manual provides all the information required for problem-free operation of
the information terminal CERTO Floor-Standing Model.
Having studied the operating manual you will be able to:
− replace consumables (e.g. paper),

− evaluate device-specific status displays and system error messages,
− eliminate problems (such as paper jams),
− properly operate the system.

Important safety precautions Introduction
Important safety precautions

Please read the following notes carefully before doing any work on the device.
This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for information processing
equipment.
− Note the warning and information labels on the device.
− The device is equipped with a safety-tested power cable, which must be connected
only to a suitable grounded outlet.
− Always hold the plug when removing the power cable. Never pull the cable itself.
− Install cables in such a way that they will not be stepped on or tripped over or damaged
or crushed in any way.
− Have damaged power cables replaced immediately.
− Make sure that there is always free access to the sockets used or to the electrical
circuit-breakers of the house installation.
− In case of an emergency (e.g. damaged cabinets, controls or power cables, liquids or

foreign objects in the device) take the following steps:
Deactivate the device immediately by:
Switching off the automatic circuit-breaker or removing the fuse inset from the fuse
holder in the distribution box of the building installation or by disconnecting the plug
connectors of the power supply cables from the grounded sockets in the building
installation or by switching off the ON/OFF switch on the power distributor.
Inform the customer service responsible for you.
− During a thunderstorm, data transmission lines must not be connected or

disconnected.
− Only use accessories and extension components that have been approved by us.
Nonobservance can result in damage to the system or violations of regulations
concerning safety, radio interference and ergonomical requirements.

Introduction Important safety precautions
− Note that there are only safety extra-low voltage circuits (SELV circuits) if you want to
feed voltage from an external source into prepared cables to install additional
electronics (e.g. connection for an intruder alarm system).
− To clean the device only use cleaning agents approved by Wincor Nixdorf International
GmbH (see chapter "Cleaning, Service and Maintenance").
Repairs
Repair work may only be carried out by authorized personnel.
Unauthorized opening of the device or repair work carried out improperly could
result in considerable danger to the user.
In case of noncompliance, Wincor Nixdorf International GmbH excludes all

liability.
Lithium batteries
There is danger of fire or explosion if the batteries are handled incorrectly. It is

therefore important to note the following points:
− Avoid short circuits.

− Never recharge the battery.
− Avoid temperatures above 100 °C.
− Do not try to open the battery by force.
− Do not allow the battery to come into contact with water or fire.
Replace only with the same or an equivalent type recommended by Wincor

Nixdorf International GmbH (see chapter "Appendix", section "Consumables").
Dispose of used batteries in compliance with national regulations and the
manufacturer's specifications.

General power interrupt Introduction
General power interrupt

A general power interrupt has the following effects:
- All current transactions are immediately aborted.
To ensure that the entire device is disconnected from power, you must also pull the plug
of the power cable from the wall outlet or interrupt the power supply in the distributor box
of the building by switching off the circuit-breaker or by removing the fuse.

The information terminal CERTO Floor-Standing Model is a multifunctional terminal
designed for indoor installation.

Device with base plate

The device versions mentioned above (CERTO with and without printer) are installed on a
base plate if the device cannot be securely fastened to the floor with screws.

Basic Operation
Opening / closing the device

To open and to close the device doors (monitor
cover, rear cover, equipment carriage) the set of
keys shown here is supplied.

Insert the supplied key into the lock and turn it in

the direction of the arrow.

Hook the rear cover in the mounting holes (see

arrows) and lock it.
Take the cables through the holes in the

rear cover and ensure that they are not
crushed.

Grasp the equipment carriage (2) on the sides

and pull it out of the device as far as possible.

Push the equipment carriage (1) into the device
as far as possible.
Turn the key in the direction indicated by the

arrow (2) and remove it from the lock.

Removing the front panel
• Pull out the equipment carriage (see section "Pulling out the equipment carriage").
Grasping it on both sides, pull the front panel

upwards to disengage the hooks (1).
Pull the front panel a little forwards (2) and set it

down carefully in front of the device.
Installing the front panel

Place the hooks of the front panel (1) on the
securing bolts at the sides (see arrows).
• Push the equipment carriage in and lock it (see section "Pushing in the equipment
carriage").

Removing / installing the rear cover
• Remove the front panel (see section "Removing the front panel").
Remove the four screws (1).
Remove the cover (2) at the rear.
Secure the rear cover by following the same steps in reverse order.
Take the cables through the holes in the rear cover and ensure that they are not
crushed.

• Open the monitor cover (see section "Opening / closing the device").
Turn the device on by pushing the switch-on

button of the system unit (PC).
Switching off the device
• Open the monitor cover (see section "Opening / closing the device").
• Connect an operator keyboard (see section "Connecting / removing an operator
keyboard") and power down the system unit.
• Remove the operator keyboard.
• Close the monitor cover (see section "Opening / closing the device").
You can only disconnect the device completely from the power supply by
disconnecting the power cable from the grounding wall outlet (see chapter
"Introduction", section "General power interrupt").

If the device was switched off via the power distributor, first push the power switch on the
power distributor and then turn on the PC.
Turn the device on using the power switch on

the power distributor.
The power switch lights up when the

device is turned on.
Push the green switch-on button to turn the PC

on.

• Connect an operator keyboard (see section "Connecting / removing an operator
keyboard") and power down the system unit.
• Remove the operator keyboard.
• Push the equipment carriage back in and lock it (see section "Pushing in the
equipment carriage").
If required, the information terminal CERTO Floor-Standing Model can be

switched off completely via the power switch on the power distributor.
You can only disconnect the device completely from the power supply by
disconnecting the power cable from the grounding wall outlet (see chapter
"Introduction", section "General power interrupt").

If you want to power down the system, install software or change any settings, you first
have to connect an operator keyboard (optional).
• Open the monitor cover and remove the rear cover if necessary (see section
"Opening / closing the device").
If the device is not equipped with a swipe card

reader, connect the operator keyboard directly
to the PC.
If the device is equipped with a swipe card

reader, plug the keyboard cable in the socket
(1).
• When you have completed your operation, unplug the keyboard cable.
• Reinstall the rear cover and close the monitor cover (see section "Opening / closing
the device").

If you want to power down the system, install software or change any settings, you first
have to connect an operator keyboard (optional).
Plug the keyboard cable in the socket.
When you have completed your operation,

unplug the keyboard cable.
• Push the equipment carriage back in and lock it (see section "Pushing in the
equipment carriage").

• Open the monitor cover and remove the rear cover if necessary (see section
"Opening / closing the device").
Connect the portable drive to the USB port (see

chapter "Portable USB CD-ROM Drive" or
"Portable USB Disk Drive").
• When you have completed your operation and you no longer need the drive, detach
the CD-ROM or disk drive cable ( see chapter "Portable USB CD-ROM Drive" or
"Portable USB Disk Drive").
• Reinstall the rear cover and close the monitor cover (see section "Opening / closing
the device").
15" LCD monitor

The monitor of the information terminal CERTO Floor-Standing Model has been optimally
set in the factory.
The brightness control enables you to adjust the backlight of the monitor.
The LED indicates the monitor's operating state:
LED lights up yellow: The monitor is in standby

LED lights up green: The monitor is in operation

Receipt Printer TH22
The TH22 printer is a compact printer with a thermal printing unit, integrated cutter and a
presenter.
The paper path is controlled by several paper sensors. The printer is equipped with
sensors which indicate the remaining quantity of paper (weekend supply) and the end of
the paper supply. The paper supply can thus be monitored with the user software.

Status LED
The status LED (1), (red, yellow or green)
indicates the current status of the printer.
1 The significance of the various LED displays is
explained in the "Printer messages" section.
LINE FEED key

Press the LINE FEED key (1) to feed paper line
by line.
Press the LINE FEED and FORM FEED keys (see section "FORM FEED key")
simultaneously for at least 5 seconds with the printer cover open to trigger a
printer reset.

Press the FORM FEED key (1) to output an
unprinted form.

Press the release lever for the printer cover in
the direction shown by the arrow (1) and swing
the printer cover upwards (2).
Please note that the paper feed rollers

may start moving when the printer cover is
open.
Neckties, long hair or jewelry must not

come close to the paper feed rollers.
Close the printer cover until the release lever

automatically locks into place.

• Pull the equipment carriage out of the device as far as possible (see chapter "Basic
Operation", section "Opening / closing the device").
Tear the paper between the printer and the

paper roll.
Remove the paper roll (with the remaining

paper) from the paper roll holder.

Press the release lever in the direction shown by

the arrow (1) and swing the printer cover
upwards (2).

• Press the LINE FEED key. This transports the remaining paper out of the printer.
Remove any remaining paper from the printer.

Check that there is no paper left in the printer.

There must not be any paper visible through
the openings in the paper transport (see
arrows).
If there is still paper in the printer, press

the LINE FEED key again and remove
the remaining paper from the printer.


Only use the paper types that are approved for this device.
Exact details are described in the section "Paper specifications". Prior to inserting
a new paper roll, make sure that the beginning of the roll is not torn or folded. The
beginning of the roll must be cut at right angles (see illustration below).
Pull the old paper roll (1) off the paper roll shaft
1 in the direction of the arrow (2).

roll in the direction shown by the arrow (2).

Position the paper roll with the shaft in the

paper roll holder.
Position the paper roll so that the shaft guide

(grooves) lies in the paper roll holder.
Insert the paper as shown in the middle of the

insertion slot.
Push the paper in as far as possible.
The paper is pulled in and aligned
automatically. Then an unprinted form is
ejected, followed by a test form with 'Paper
Loaded' printed on it.
If nothing is printed on the test form, the

paper roll was inserted incorrectly.

• Push the equipment carriage in the device as far as possible (see chapter "Basic

Weekend sensor
The weekend sensor is located on the paper roll holder.
The photosensor reports to the application whether or not a minimum amount of paper is
available. Depending on the application, this message can be evaluated and displayed on
a screen, for example.
The current print job is executed normally.
There are 12 m left on the paper roll.
Paper-out sensor
The paper-out sensor is located below the platen in the print unit.
The photosensor reports the absolute end of paper to the application and to the printer.
Depending on the application, this message can be evaluated and displayed on a screen,
for example.
The current print job is aborted.
In addition, the printer status LED blinks yellow 3 times in rapid succession (see section
"Printer messages").

Printer messages
The printer messages are displayed by the status LED on the receipt printer.
Depending on the application that is in use, printer messages can also be output to a
display.
A printer message is displayed by the blinking status LED in a particular color. Each
printer message is characterized by a certain number of blinks. The blinking cycle is
repeated every second or every two seconds until the cause of the error has been
eliminated.
The printer determines automatically whether or not the error has been
eliminated. If the error has been eliminated, the respective error message
disappears.

Yellow 4 Paper jam Remove the paper jam (see section
(blinking) "Paper jam").
Yellow 5 Error in power supply Switch the system off and on again. If this
(blinking) does not remove the error, please
contact Service.
Yellow 6 Printer cover open Close the printer cover.

Red 2 Logical program error Contact Service.

Red 3 RAM error Contact Service.

Problems
No supply voltage
• Check that the power supply connector is fitted correctly (see section "Functional
elements and controls", item 4 in the illustration "Printer control panel and
connections") and inspect the connector cable.
• If you cannot find the cause of the error, please contact Service.

Paper jam
To remove a paper jam, power down the PC via the operator keyboard and switch
the device off using the power switch on the power distributor (see chapter "Basic
Operation, section "Switching on / switching off the device").

Pull the paper out of the paper feed (see

arrow).
Removing paper residue under the printer cover

Remove any paper that is still located in the
paper path or on the paper transport roller (1).

Removing paper residue under the paper cutter

Move the locking lever of the drive shaft in the
direction shown by the arrow to unlock the drive
shaft.
Remove the unlocked drive shaft from the

printer in the direction shown by the arrow.
Remove any paper under the paper cutter.

Then replace the drive shaft (see illustration

below).
• When mounting the drive shaft, first place it in the guide at the position marked (1) and
then hold it in the guide with one hand.
Then place the drive shaft in the position marked (2). Press the shaft into the guide
and move the locking lever upwards.
Check that both ends of the drive shaft lock into position correctly in the guide.

Closing the printer cover and inserting paper

• Switch the device on again using the power switch on the power distributor and turn
the PC on by pushing its switch-on button (see chapter "Basic Operation", section
"Switching on / switching off the device").

Remedying poor print quality

The cause for poor print quality could be a dirty thermal array. This section
describes how to clean the thermal array.
If this does not improve the print quality, please contact Service.

Move the locking lever of the drive shaft in the

direction shown by the arrow to unlock the drive
shaft.

Remove the unlocked drive shaft from the

printer in the direction shown by the arrow.
Pull the paper out of the paper feed.
Clean the thermal head with a lint-free cloth

soaked in alcohol.

Then replace the drive shaft (see illustration

below).
• When mounting the drive shaft, first place it in the guide at the position marked (1) and
then hold it in the guide with one hand.
Then place the drive shaft in the position marked (2). Press the shaft into the guide
and move the locking lever upwards.
Check that both ends of the drive shaft lock into position correctly in the guide.

A power failure during printing may occur in the following two situations:
− Paper is covering the output photosensor
− Paper is not covering the output photosensor

Once power returns, the printed receipt is cut and output.

Swipe Card Reader
Inserting the ID card

When you insert an ID card, you should make sure that the magnetic stripe is in the
correct position.
The swipe card reader cannot read the ID card information unless you pull the ID card
through the slot in one smooth and quick motion. Make sure that the magnetic stripe is
pointing outward to the right.

Make sure that no dirt remains in the card insertion slot. (If necessary, clean the card

Inserting the ID card

When you insert an ID card, you should make sure that the magnetic stripe is in the
correct position.
The ID card unit cannot read the ID card information correctly unless you insert the ID
card into the ID card unit as described below.
The insertion of the ID card depends on the installation position of the card reader. The ID
card be inserted in the following ways:
Mounting position: track on the right facing up
Insert the ID card into the ID card unit as shown

in the picture.

The DIP card reader is cleaned with a cleaning card.

Important safety precautions

− Avoid looking directly into laser light for a longer period of time.
− Using optical instruments, e.g. binoculars, microscopes and magnifying glasses, while
looking at the laser can cause considerable damage to your eyes.
− Note that inside the laser the output power can amount to 0.9 mW.

General information
By default the laser scanner will switch automatically to sleep mode after 30 minutes.
Sleep mode is indicated by periodical flashing of the red LED. In this mode no barcodes
can be read.
In normal operation the scanner is activated via the application. For test purposes the
'sleep mode' switch may also be used (see device view).
Status messages of the LED display

The following table gives an overview of the status messages of the LED indicators.

Portable USB CD-ROM Drive
This chapter describes the basic functions and controls of the USB CD-ROM drive.
Before operating the device please be sure to read the manufacturer's

instructions.

The busy indicator blinks when the CD-ROM drive is in use or when it is being
accessed. When supply voltage is turned on, it shows a green light.

First, plug in the supplied cable at the rear of
the CD-ROM drive.
Press the two release buttons on the right and
left (1) of the connector and carefully attach it to
the connector on the CD-ROM drive.
Connect the USB connector to an available

USB socket on the PC.
Use the supplied extension cable if necessary.
The CD-ROM drive can be connected while the PC is turned on.
Disconnecting the CD-ROM drive

• First detach the USB connector from the PC.
The USB connector can be removed while the PC is turned on. Make sure that
the CD-ROM drive is not being accessed at the same time (blinking LED).
• If you want to remove the connector from the CD-ROM drive, press the release
buttons and carefully detach the connector.

Portable USB Disk Drive
This chapter describes the basic functions and controls of the USB disk drive.
Before operating the device please be sure to read the manufacturer's

instructions.
Verify that there is no diskette in the drive when you turn on the PC. Otherwise it
will try to boot from the diskette.

• Connect the USB connector to an available USB socket on the PC. Use the supplied
extension cable if necessary.
The disk drive can be connected while the PC is turned on.

• Detach the USB connector of the disk drive from the PC.
The USB connector can be removed while the PC is turned on. Make sure that
the disk drive is not being accessed at the same time (LED is on).

Please refer to the chapters for the individual system components for information on how
to clean, service and maintain the system components.
The device must be switched off for service and maintenance work (see chapter
"Basic Operation").
You should service and clean the parts of the device listed below at the specified
intervals.
In addition, please note the following:
− Take care not to drop any cleaning liquids into the device.
− Only use the cleaning material listed in this manual. Do not use alcohol or thinners.
