Unit 05 - Lesson 02 - Solid Slab Design Spanning in One Direction

This document provides instruction on designing one-way reinforced concrete slabs according to BS 8110-1:1997. It discusses slab types, design steps, and an example problem. The key steps in slab design are: [1] determining if the slab spans one-way or two-way based on span ratios, [2] calculating design loads and bending moments, [3] sizing reinforcement to resist bending based on calculations of K-values and steel ratios, and [4] checking deflection. An example problem demonstrates applying the process to design a simply supported one-way slab for an additional classroom area. The design involves calculating section properties, loads, moments, and sizing reinforcement steel.

Chapter 05-Lesson 01
Design of Solid Slab Spanning in One

F. M. M Abdullah
CHAPTER 05-Lesson 02 REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN TO BS 8110-1:1997

CHAPTER 05:
GENERAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

 Design a one way spanning slab
 Use the table to calculate bending moments given in the BS 8110
 Calculate the required area of steel and distribution steel
 Sketch the details of the reinforcement based on curtailment

1. INTRODUCTION

In a one way spanning slab, the main reinforcement is designed to span in one direction only. This can
only happen when the slab is supported only on its two sides and if ratio of 𝑙𝑦 /𝑙𝑥 is greater than 02.

The slabs are designed as if they consists of a series of beams of 1 m breath. The main steel is in the
direction of the span and secondary or distribution steel required in the transverse direction. The
calculations for bending reinforcement follow a similar procedures to that used in beam design.

2. DESIGN OF ONE WAY SLAB SIMPLY SUPPORTED SLAB

Design step of a one-way slab as follows

1. Assume the depth of the slab based on the stiffness.

a) Determine the overall height
b) Generally 125mm to 200mm is practicable.
2. Find the 𝑙𝑥 and 𝑙𝑦 , If 𝑙𝑦 /𝑙 𝑥 𝑖𝑠 ≤ 2 design is limited to two-way slab, if not slab should be designed as one-
way spanning.
3. Define the material properties and structural parameters.
a) Concrete grade (fcu)
b) Exposure condition
c) Fire protection
d) Cover to reinforcement
e) Grade of steel (fy)
4. Calculate the ultimate load considering 1 m width of the slab.
a) Calculate all the floor dead loads, superimposed dead loads and live load.
b) Calculate the ultimate design load for 1 m strip based on the code.
5. Calculate the bending moment shear force
 One way simply supported – Use general equation to calculate BM and SF
 One way continuous – Calculate BM and SF based on the boundary conditions given in the table 3.2 of BS
8110-1 and calculate the design bending moments.

When the spans are differ calculation of moments will be as follows
F = 1.4 Gk + 1.6 Qk
(nl) – maximum value from either side
M = () F L
L – maximum span
M = () (nl) l

6. Calculate the value of 𝐾,

a) 𝐾 = 𝑀𝑢 /𝑏𝑑2 𝑓𝑐𝑢 , 𝑀𝑢 = design bending moment,
b) If 𝐾 < 𝐾’ compression steel is not required. If not compression steel is required, where 𝐾’ =
0.156.
7. Calculate the area of steel at the mid span and supports of the slab in both directions.
a) If 𝐾 < 𝐾’, use
𝑀
𝐴𝑠,𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 𝑓𝑍
0.95 𝑦
,
but 𝐴𝑠,𝑟𝑒𝑞 > 0.13%𝑏ℎ
b) Where
𝑍 = 𝑑[0.5 + (0.25 − 𝐾⁄0.9)1/2 ] or 𝑍 = 0.95𝑑
c) But choose minimum Z for 𝐴𝑠,𝑟𝑒𝑞
8. Provide reinforcement steel. But limited to S < 3d.
9. Check for deflection.

3. DESIGN OF ONE WAY CONTINUOUS SLAB

For one way continuous slab, reinforcements are required at the bottom section at mid span while
support reinforcements are required at the top section. Moments and shear forces are obtained from
Table 3.13, BS 8110 provided that the following guidelines.
 The area of each bay is greater than 30 m2
𝑞k

 The area of each bay, exceeds 30 m2

 The ratio of characteristic imposed load to characteristic dead load does not exceed 1.25
 The characteristic imposed load does not exceed 5 kN/m2 excluding partitions

If the above conditions are not satisfied, slab can be analyzed using elastic analysis or using software

CHAPTER 05-Lesson 02 REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN TO BS 8110-1:1997

EXERCISE 01

A simply supported reinforced concrete slab spans between two brick walls on both sides. The span (Lx)
is 3.0 m from center to center. The length (Ly) of the slab is 8.0 m. The Slab is designed to carry a dead
load of 2.5 kN/m2 and live load of 1.5 kN/m2. Design the slab panel for flexure and check for deflection.

EXERCISE 02

A simply supported reinforced concrete slab spans between two brick walls on both sides. The span (Lx)
is 3.5m from center to center. The length (Ly) of the slab is 12.0 m. Design the slab panel for flexure and
check for deflection.

12000 mm

Structural loadings

Dead load by floor finishes 2.0 kN/m2

Dead load by Ceiling and services 0.5 kN/m2

Imposed load on floors 3.0 kN/m2

EXERCISE 03

The plan and elevation of the structure shown in the next page relate to a proposed structural layout of a
three-storied building for a school. Design the first floor slab, assuming all the loads are uniformly
distributed. Following loading values are to be applicable for the structure.

Structural loadings

Unit weight of block wall 16 kN/m3

Dead load by floor finishes 1.25 kN/m2

Imposed load on floors 2.5 kN/m2
