Reflection Essay
Munsayac, Angela A.

1. Explain the concept of six sigma.

According to Jaipur National University, “Six-Sigma is a long-term, forward-

thinking initiative designed to fundamentally change the way corporations do business.
It is first and foremost ‘a business process that enables companies to increase profits
dramatically by streamlining operations, improving quality, and eliminating defects or
mistakes in everything a company does.’” It aims to satisfy the customer, to lift internal
performance, to enable better performance by better design, to improve the quality of
purchased supplies, and to reduce the costs. It was developed to enrich what is needed
in the process to prevent defective products.

2. What is DMAIC?

DMAIC is the abbreviation for the five steps of sigma. It stands for Define the
goals of improvement activity, Measure existing systems, Analyze the system, Improve
the system, and Control the new system.

Defining the goals of improvement activity comprises of (top level) determining

the strategic objectives of the organization to reach a common goal, increasing output of
production (operations level), and deducing what can be done to reduce the defective
products (project level goals).

Measuring the existing systems will establish valid and reliable metrics that will
be of great help in monitoring the progress of the operation or production of the goal.

Analyzing the system will eliminate the gap between the current performance of
the system and the desired goal.

Improving the system means finding new ways to do things better, cheaper or
faster.

Controlling the new system means institutionalizing the improved system by

modifying compensation and incentive systems, policies, procedures, MRP, budgets,
operating instructions and other management systems.
3. If you will apply six sigma to your personal life, what could be the
change?

If will apply the six sigma in my personal life, my life would be different in a more
disciplined way. By ensuring that the steps are met accordingly, maybe my decisions in
life would turn out great with success. With the guidance of six sigma, I might be able to
achieve my goal to be a CPA by:

 Determining what subjects I find hard and try to focus on that.

 Scheduling my time of review and doing assignments on time.
 Analyzing ways how to study efficiently not only for day-to-day classes but
for the licensure exam ahead.
 Investing in books of different authors and comparing their ways of solving
the problems in accounting
 Rewarding myself whenever I achieved something great
