Inner and Outer Games exist in music making, concert programming,

dance, theater, sports, and business.

Our inner focus is internal. Our outer focus is external.

There is no right or wrong, good or bad. Both exist.
Our awareness and acceptance of both can inform our decisions.

HOW do we MAKE MUSIC?

WHY do we MAKE MUSIC?

• Outer requirements – expectations, demands, obligations.

• Common program motivations include: (1) competition, (2) rewards and $$,
(3) technical advancement, (4) self-identity and status, (5) boast or grandstand.

• Inner goal – Music that we feel – role as messenger in the arts.

• Common motivations are to share: (1) joy/pleasure, (2) inspiration, (3) human compassion,
(4) environmental compassion, (5) journey/fantasy.

• Corporon quote: “Music has the potential to empower, enrich, and change lives. The music we
choose should have a convincing and compelling reason.”

• Clevinger Video (BML): “Music Is a High Calling – A Sacred Trust”

The Mastery of Music
Ten Pathways to True Artistry
Barry Green
The Inner Game of Music, the breakout hit that became a standard
primer in the music world, has taught thousands of musicians—
professionals and amateurs alike—how to overcome self-consciousness
and stage fright and to recapture a youthful, almost effortless capacity to
learn.
In his follow-up book, The Mastery of Music, Barry Green turns his expert hand to the
artistic pathways leading to extraordinary musicianship. He culls advice from dozens of
interviews with legends, including Dave Brubeck, Bobby McFerrin, Christopher Parkening,
Doc Severinsen, Frederica von Stade, Joshua Bell, the Harlem Boys Choir, and the Turtle
Island String Quartet. In these dialogues, he discovers that it’s not enough to have a cerebral
and emotional connection to the notes.
Essential reading for every musician, The Mastery of Music strikes a beautiful new chord.
