This document appears to be an exam for a structural optimization course. It contains 5 questions related to structural optimization concepts and techniques. Question 1 asks to formulate and solve a minimum weight problem for a cantilever beam graphically. Question 2 explains concepts related to local/global minima/maxima and stationary points, and asks about Kuhn-Tucker conditions or Lagrange multiplier methods. Question 3 involves finding extreme points of a function and explaining genetic algorithms. Question 4 uses the simplex method to minimize functions subject to constraints. ME – SEMESTER – I (New)– EXAMINATION – WINTER-2019
Subject Code: 3712018 Date: 06-01-2020
Subject Name: Structural Optimization
Time: 02:30 PM TO 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 Formulate the problem for minimum weight in terms of optimization statement 14
and solve it graphically. A cantilever beam of length of 2.5 m subjected to point
load of 10 kN at tip of beam. Maximum deflection should not more than
span/250. Width of beam should not be less than 150 mm.
Q.2 (a) Explain the terms: Local and Global Minima, Local and global Maxima, 07
Stationary point.
(b) Explain Kuhn-Tucker Conditions. 07
OR
(b) Explain Langrange Multiplier Method with its application and limitations. 07
Q.3 (a) Find the extreme points of the function: f(x) = x13 + x23 + 5x12 + 7x22 + 60 07
(b) What is genetic algorithm for optimization? Why genetic algorithm is required? 07
OR
Q.3 (a) A beam of uniform rectangular cross section is to be cut from a log having a 07
circular cross section of diameter ‘2a’. The beam must be used as cantilever beam
to carry UDL throughout the length of beam. The length is fixed. Find the
dimensions of the beam that corresponds to the maximum tensile stress carrying
capacity. Use only necessary condition of Langrange multiplier method.
(b) Using Kuhn Tucker condition, maximize the function: f(x) 07
= 4 X1 + 3 X2 subject to g(X1, X2) = 2X1 + X2 ≤ 10 and X1, X2 ≥ 0
Q.4 Using simplex method, minimize the function: 14
f = 4X1 + 2X2 + X3 subject to 2X1 + X2 + X3 ≤ 4, -X1 + 2X3 ≤ 3, X1,
X2, X3 ≥ 0
OR
Q.4 Use simplex method to minimize: 14
f(P, Q) = 3P + 2Q Subject to 2P + Q ≤ 18, 2P + 3Q ≤ 42, 3P + Q ≤ 24, P
≥ 0, Q ≥ 0
Q.5 Design the fixed based portal frame shown in figure 1, for minimum weight. The 14
permissible sway is 3.8 mm and permissible bending stress is 0.1 kN/mm2. Use
matrix force or displacement method. Axial deformation may be neglected.
OR
Q.5 Design a pin jointed steel frame shown in figure 2, for minimum weight. The 14
horizontal deflection is limited to 3.1 mm and vertical deflection is limited to 2.8
mm. The allowable stress in each member is limited to 140MPa. Area of all
members are same.
