How to create a Dungeons and Dragons character

Dungeons and dragons (DND) is one of the most popular table-top role
playing games (TTRPGs) of all time. It has been enjoyed for decades by
players around the world. The first step in any DND adventure though, is
making your character, and this tutorial will take you through the process of
doing just that in about 30-45 minutes.

Required Materials
• 4 sided die (d4) • 12 sided die (d12)
• 6 sided die (d6) • 20 sided die (d20)
• 8 sided die (d8) • DND Fifth Edition Character sheet
• 10 sided die (d10) • DND Players Handbook

1
Class and Race
1. The first step of creating a character is deciding which class and race your
character will be. Your character’s class is what job they will do and their race
is which species of fantasy creature they are. Character classes can be found
on page 45 of the Players handbook (PHB) and character races can be found
on page 15. Once you have selected both, write them in the box at the top
right of your sheet. (See Figure 1).

Rolling Ability Scores
1. To create your characters stats, you need to roll your d6 four times. Take the
three highest rolls (remove the lowest) and add them together. Then write
that number down.
2. Repeat this process five more times until you have a total of 6 numbers.
3. These will be your ability scores and they determine how strong your
character is.
2
Assigning Ability Scores
1. Locate the ability scores block (figure 2) on your sheet.
2. Fill in each box with one of the numbers you wrote
down. Check your class in the PHB for advice on which
stats are good for your class, and put the higher numbers
in those boxes.
3. Once all the boxes are filled, assign ability score bonuses
in the small circle under each box. Use figure 3 as a
reference for what your bonuses should be for each stat.

Proficiency Bonus
1. Locate the box labeled Proficiency Bonus (figure 4)
and put +2.

Calculating Skills
1. Locate the skills block on the left hand side of your sheet
(see figure 5).
2. In the PHB entry for your class and race, find the section
that tells you what skills your character can be naturally
proficient in. Each race and class gets several.
3. Fill in the circle to the left of the skills you are proficient in.
4. Each skill has the abbreviation for one of your ability scores
to the right of the skill name. This is the stat associated with
that skill. Fill in each line to the left of the skill name with the
ability score bonus for that stat.
5. For skills you are proficient in (filled in circles) add your

proficiency bonus to the bonus you’d normally get. Skills Block
4
Saving Throws
1. Check your class in the PHB to figure out which two
saving throws your character is proficient in.
2. Fill in the two relevant bubbles in the saving throws box
on the left side of your sheet (figure 6).
3. Fill in the ability score bonus of each saving throw, using Figure 6. Saving
Throws
the relevant stats bonus.
4. Add your proficiency bonus to the proficient saving
throws.
Passive Perception
1. Locate your passive perception box under your skills list.
(figure 7).
2. Fill in the empty space with 10 plus the bonus to your
“perception” skill in the skills box.
