SEP291 - T1 2021 - Assignment 2 - Questions
Submission due: 08:00pm 23rd May 2021. As per University policy, late submission
will incur penalty and submission will not be accepted 5 days after the deadline.
Form of submission: online submission only via the CloudDeakin site. Submission
must be in pdf format. Submitted pdf file size must be less than 5Mb. Each
submission must be self-contained in one single pdf file.
Q1. (10 marks) Using only the Laplace transform table (Figure 11.5, Tables (a) and (b)) in
the Glyn James textbook, obtain the Laplace transform of the following functions:
The results must be written in simplified form and as a single rational function. Showing result
only without reasoning or argumentation will be insufficient.
Q3. (10 marks) Find the inverse Laplace transform of the following functions:
1
(a) F (s) = (s+2)(s+6)
4s
(b) F (s) = (s−1)(s+1)2
.
Your answer must contain detailed explanation, calculation as well as logical argumentation
leading to the result. If you use mathematical theorem(s)/property(-ies) that you have learned par-
ticularly in this unit SEP291, clearly state them in your answer.
Q4. (10 marks) Find the inverse Laplace transform of the following function.
s2 + s + 1
G(s) =
s3 + s2 − 2
Your answer must contain detailed explanation, calculation as well as logical argumentation leading
to the result. If you use mathematical theorem(s)/property(-ies) that you have learned particularly
in this unit SEP291, clearly state them in your answer.
Q5. (15 marks) Using the Laplace transform method, solve for t ≥ 0 the following differential
equation:
d2 x dx
2
− 5 + 6x = 3,
dt dt
1
dx
subject to x = 0 and dt
= 0 at t = 0.
Your answer must contain detailed explanation, calculation as well as logical argumentation
leading to the result. If you use mathematical theorem(s)/property(-ies) that you have learned par-
ticularly in this unit SEP291, clearly state them in your answer.
Q6*. (15 marks) Denote by P (s) the Laplace transform of a function p(x). Given that <(s) > 0,
i.e. the real part of the complex variable s is strictly positive.
Using the Laplace transform method, solve for x ≥ 0 the following differential equation:
d2 p dp
x + (1 − x) + 2p = 0,
dx2 dx
dp
subject to p = 0 and dx
= 0 at x = 0.
Your answer must contain detailed explanation, calculation as well as logical argumentation
leading to the result. If you use mathematical theorem(s)/property(-ies) that you have learned par-
ticularly in this unit SEP291, clearly state them in your answer.
Q7. (15 marks) The following f (t) is a periodic function of period T = 2π, defined over the
period −π ≤ t ≤ π.
−2t when − π < t ≤ 0
f (t) = , of period T = 2π.
2t when 0 < t ≤ π
Express f (t) as a Fourier series expansion. Showing result only without reasoning or argument will
be insufficient.
Q8*. (15 marks) The following f (t) is a periodic function of period 2π defined over the domain
0 ≤ t ≤ π by
t when 0 ≤ t ≤ 12 π
f (t) =
2π − t when 21 π < t ≤ π
Some guidance:
All of the questions in this Assignment 2 are related to Topics 6 and 7.
Eight questions are of similar types as the ones you have dealt with in Seminars of Topics 6 and
7. If you practice sufficiently solving the seminar questions, you can solve these seminar-type
questions.
2
Questions 6 and 8 are slightly challenging questions. They are designed for whom is aiming
to get Distinction and High Distinction in Assignment 2. So, if you do not know how to solve
Questions 6 and 8 at first sight, leave it to the last. Solve the other questions first and then
come back to tackle the Questions 6 and 8 afterwards.
Even Questions 6 and 8 can be considered similar to the one you have learnt in Topics 6 and 7.
Hint: applying the Laplace transform technique and/or the Fourier Series Expansion method,
then following step by step with DILIGENT calculation .
All of the eight questions can be solved using the knowledge you have learnt from Topics 6 and
7.
The Assignment questions are very similar to the seminar questions. Thus, if you do practice
solving the seminar questions, you will surely be able to solve the Assignment 2. The Unit
Chair will be more than happy to answer all of the seminar questions, lecture notes, and unit
materials. However, any inquiry directly related to solutions of Assignment 2 questions will
not be addressed because we are in the Assignment 2 test somehow. Inquiries such as ”could
you please help me check if my solution [to Assignment...question] is correct” and ”I could not
answer Assignment...question, could you provide guidance/hint” are rendered as being directly
related to the solutions of Assignment 2 and will not be addressed. As you know, this practice is
also to maintain fairness to all students in the Assignment test. Again, Assignment 2 questions
are of the same types as seminar questions.
Reflecting previous years’ comments, the Unit Chair has chosen Sunday evening as the deadline
of this Assignment so that students, especially those are busy working in the week days, have
a bit more of weekend time to complete the Assignment. However, the teaching team does not
work on Saturday and Sunday, any inquiries sent to the teaching team on these weekend days
can only be addressed in the week days of the following week. For the best support, the Unit
Chair strongly encourages students to plan for answering the Assignment questions way ahead
of the deadline. Please do not wait until the weekend of the Assignment deadline if you intend
to have inquiries to the Unit Chair.
