In the United States, “More than 70% of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight”
(Fryer). We are eating way too much junk food and takeout. Instead, we should start baking
something once a month, with exceptions, and severely limit the amount of junk food we are
consuming. Baking and cutting our sugar intake will be healthier, bring us closer together, and
baking will be a beneficial skill to learn before departing for college.
We need to limit our sugar intake. As the Department of Health states, “Eating
junk food on a regular basis can lead to an increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases like
cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and some cancers”
(“Department of Health in Western Australia”). Those are very serious health conditions that are
life-changing, and not in a good way. Limiting our sugar intake and baking once a month is
healthier and can bring us closer together.
Baking can bring us closer together. The article, 11 Ways Cooking Brings the Family
Together, states, “The ties with your family grow stronger as you work together to prepare a
meal...”(Allessi). Working together while baking can help familiarize ourselves with each other.
Additionally, while baking we can talk about our days, and therefore, become even closer.
Learning to bake is important to not only strengthen our family bonds but as an everyday skill,
we can use for the rest of our lives.
Baking will be useful to be acquainted with prior to leaving for college.
According to The Benefits of Learning Baking, “since you are the baker, you are sure that what
you consume is fresh and is not filled with preservatives as sometimes happens with the food you
buy from other sources.” (Stewart). Baking can help prevent eating unhealthy preservatives and
allow us to know what we are making is fresh. For this reason, learning how to bake will be
beneficial.
Limiting our sugar intake and beginning to bake will be practical. In short, we need to
restrain the amount of sugar we are consuming before there are consequences. Baking can bring
us closer by giving us time to work together and create something tasty. Also, baking would be a
very convenient life skill. Let’s take the first step out of our unhealthy addiction, and into a
healthier option, baking.
