Faculty of Engineering & Technology: EME1026 Fluid Mechanics Trimester 1 (2020/2021) Assignment 1

This document provides information for Assignment 1 of the Fluid Mechanics course. It includes: 1) A problem statement asking students to determine if the force on a cable attached to an elastic balloon over water changes as air pressure increases, and if so, to calculate the percentage change. 2) An instruction for students to plot the relationship between percentage change in cable tension and air pressure from 0.5 to 15 MPa using Excel/Sheets. 3) Students must show all working, calculations, tables and plots in their assignment answers.

Instruction:

1. Individual assignment 1 attained 5% of the overall marks.

2. Working steps, solutions, table, and graph should be shown in the answer script.

3. Assignment 1 template (Page 1 – Page 4) should be used as front cover before the
Assignment 1 answer script.

4. The due date for the assignment 1 submission is on 3rd August 2020, Monday, at 9.30
pm. The assignment 1 is required to be uploaded in Google Form (Assignment 1) in a
single PDF file with student ID as the filename (1101101234.pdf).

5. Plagiarism or late submission of the Assignment 1 will be penalised.

Problem Statement:

Fig. 1 shows an elastic air balloon having a diameter of 30 cm is attached to the base of a
container partially filled with water at +4°C. If the pressure of the air above the water is
gradually increased from 100 kPa to 1.6 MPa, will the force on the cable change? If so, what
is the percent change in the force? Assume the pressure on the free surface and the diameter of
the balloon are related by P = CDn, where C is a constant and n = −2. The weight of the balloon
and the air in it is negligible.

Figure 1

Based on the problem statement given above, students are also required to use MS Excel or
Google Sheet to investigate the effect of air pressure above water on the cable force. Assuming
the pressure vary from 0.5 MPa to 15 MPa. Plot the percentage of change in cable tension
versus the tank pressure.

Please clearly shows the theoretical derivation, relevant plots, and any numerical calculations,
where applicable. Students are required to show all the working solutions including the
tabulated table that showing the relationship between the percentage of change in cable tension
and the tank pressure, and the plotted graph in the Assignment 1 answer script.
